My long-time passion for teaching literature brings me insight into the stories that inform the human longing for connection as well as the individual need for narrative expression.
I counsel couples and families through a variety of life-stages, helping them find well-being in their changing roles. Dedicated to working through the entire therapeutic process with you and those you love, I create a time and place for couples and families to explore their challenges and find acceptance, appreciation and gratitude for each family member. I believe that acceptance in the face of struggle and transformation is the first step for change and healing. I offer clear and compassionate guidance to you so that you may become gentle, kind witnesses of yourselves and others.

My therapeutic approach combines Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), attachment theory, mindfulness, expressive and narrative therapy, internal family systems, anti-oppression theory, dream work, traditional healing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and liberation psychology.
I support couples and individuals in creating the relationships that they want. So often our relationships can be a place of struggle, disappointment, and disconnection, when we long to feel loved, supported, and connected. I create a safe space with clients to bring awareness and compassion to patterns of coping and surviving. I help clients to understand their inner experience, and guide them toward communicating with openness and skill. Relationships are one of our greatest resources, and getting support for conflict can be a starting point for true intimacy, healing and resilience.

Each of us has a wealth of wisdom within us, but circumstances sometimes prevent us from accessing our own innate wisdom. Therapy is a process of discovery and a way to receive assistance in accessing your own deep wisdom. My role as your therapist is to walk beside you on this journey and to help you make the most of your unique inner wisdom through talking, reflecting, learning, and discovering your own inner strength, resiliency, and ability to navigate life's challenges successfully.

Are you experiencing distressing symptoms from unresolved childhood trauma? You may be experiencing PTSD, flashbacks, nightmares, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, behavioral addictions, or substance use. Perhaps you are going through a major life change or crisis & experiencing trauma triggers that are now wreaking havoc in your life & in significant relationships. I work with those who have experienced trauma at some time in their life. Together, we'll explore how & where the trauma became dysfunctionally stored & we will also explore those Parts that are desperately trying to protect the Self from further distress or pain.

I am a thoughtful and creative person who gravitated to counseling after a career designing safe structures to help meet our community’s need for housing. I wish health was as easy as building better structures, and I still do believe that is part of the way forward. In therapy for instance, there are structured exercises and treatments to draw from that really work in the right situation. Emotions focused, somatic and relational techniques can help provide some of that structure in my practice. There are also some more subtle dimensions of our existence and it is healthy to embrace those as well.

Relationships are challenging, and we sometimes forget that our relationship with ourselves can be the most challenging of all. By exploring how we view ourselves in relation to those around us, we can identify relational patterns that may have become problematic, and work to strengthen the patterns that are already helpful. My goal is to help each of my clients access their own deep wisdom, strength, and insight so that they can move in the world in a more meaningful and fulfilling way.

When we struggle with depression, anxiety, pain from the past, or traumatic stress, our relationships struggle too. Often the pain experienced in relationships with our loved ones is what drives us to find relief and solutions from the disconnect and disruption we are in the midst of. We don't just want to feel better, we want to be better: Better to ourselves, better to those we love. Engaging in therapy and neurofeedback is about looking for the solutions that will enable us to move beyond the obstacles and into the connections we really desire.

Often, our past stories of trauma and heartache play out in the present and keep us from fully living the lives we desire. Therapy is a place for us to reflect on how these stories have impacted you so that you can regain agency and freedom over your life. Through understanding your past wounds more deeply, I believe we will come to see that these places of pain and trauma are the very grounds for beauty, gifting, and the rebirthing of desire in your relationships and life.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
