Are you overwhelmed? Is it hard to even get out of bed, sometimes? Do you feel misunderstood or frustrated in your relationships at home or work? Are there certain people or situations that you don't have the energy to deal with? I understand these struggles and how hard it can be to get through each day. You are not alone. We all experience big feelings and the challenges of just being human. Life can be hard but there is hope. Your past doesn’t have to define your present.

Some problems must be dealt with head-on. Through counseling we can together help to discover the heart of the issue, and work to eliminate its symptoms over time. It is important to get to the root of the problem, in order to facilitate a new trajectory for your future. Sometimes people cannot fully solve a problem, but they can instead learn to live a fulfilling life in spite of it. Many disabilities and mental disorders cannot be fully cured, but clients can learn to accept what they can and can't change and healthily accommodate them . Therapy can help with this transition, and you will find tools to better cope.

I offer in-person appointments in Gig Harbor WA and Kingston WA, as well as Telehealth. Over the past 10+ years I have worked predominately with teens, adults and couples. We work in a spirit of collaboration, moving through the telling of your story, recognizing patterns, knowing your values, seeing the bigger picture and together finding solutions to heal and grow. This process can sometimes be hard, but the benefits of this work far outweigh staying the same. If you want a steady, nurturing but challenging therapeutic partnership, then you may have found the counselor for you.

There are times when everyone needs a listening ear to help guide them through life's challenges. I would be honored to assist you in this process of figuring out how to move through the confusion and frustrations that may be hindering your quality of life. Hi. I'm Lisa Smith, a Clinical Social Worker. I like our therapy to be a time of creating what next steps you are willing to try. Together we think of the barrier. I act as a coach for accountability with awareness of any diagnosis or past struggles you've had. I highlight your strengths and together we celebrate victories. The therapy I use is research-based. I'll show you the logic and ease of following incremental steps. I will share the traits of your personality or diagnosis that are working for or hindering progress. When plans don't work, we begin again.

Currently offering ketamine treatment through Journey Clinical. I'm trained in multiple therapeutic platforms for alternative medicines. Each person is unique in their own way. We come together to share and at times there are narratives that create a loss of authenticity. Each of use are accustomed to putting on our armor, attempting to present our self and carrying this self into our relationships. If we are not practicing a coordination of somatic, mindful acceptance, there is an innate loud, blaming inner voice that confuses and minimizes wholeness. Each person is an independent vessel with ability to heal.

The journey we are on takes us in all different directions, testing us at every turn. There is help and hope. I have been honored to hear people's stories at various points of their journey; witnessing, observing, supporting, empathizing, listening and reflecting. Through hearing their stories, I have learned how fragile the human condition is, and at the same time, the empowering strengths and resiliency each one intrinsically has in adapting and surviving the difficulties put before them. Please reach out, I'd be happy to meet for a brief consultation to see if we'd be a good fit!

Christian Therapists
Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?
Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work effectively together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience in tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of culture, religion, and other factors on each individual.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Christian values?
Each person brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of treatment modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition that strongly influences the way they conduct their everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process. For some clients, a Christian therapist is likely to incorporate faith-based principles into emotional healing techniques.

How do I recognize an effective Christian therapist?
Christian therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Christian beliefs and values. They have an understanding of the importance that Christian principles play in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of struggles that can affect daily functioning. Like all effective therapists, a Christian therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of life.

Why might someone feel comfortable with a Christian therapist?
While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic success. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who not only is responsive to questions and concerns but also shares a client’s faith and values. Sensitivity to spiritual matters as well as to everyday struggles can provide a welcome sense of safety and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, both of which support the therapeutic process.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Christian therapists?
The directory of Christian therapists includes professionals who have shared their background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Christian clients, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
