As a therapist, I believe in being genuine, respectful and empathetic. For a therapeutic relationship to develop, clients need to feel seen and understood. I strive to help my clients understand and cope with difficult feelings, improving their relationships with themselves and the people they care about. Years ago, as a beginning therapist, I was influenced by research showing that the critical therapeutic element in psychotherapy, regardless of the methodology, was the relationship between the therapist and the client. Contemporary research confirms the importance of the therapeutic relationship in fostering change.

My approach focuses on developing self-understanding, compassion, radical acceptance, and skills for creating more ease, joy, and intimacy with both yourself and others.
My clients typically come to therapy finding themselves stuck in relational patterns that are not working or navigating significant changes in their lives. This can lead to anxiety, depression, symptoms related to trauma, or other issues that amplify relational stress, often creating a feedback loop that can be hard to break free of on your own. While it’s often clear when something isn’t working, it can be hard to sort out where to start to create meaningful change.

You've spent your life wondering why everything that looks effortless for others but costs you so much. You over-prepare, work hard, and underneath things always feel off-balance. Your body has been sending flares for years, with fatigue and strange symptoms that no one can explain, waved off as "probably stress," but you know there has to be more going on. You're not burned out because you're weak. You are burned out because you've spent a lifetime succeeding while also wrestling with yourself, leading only to exhaustion. You have hope that change is on the horizon, but a different type of help will be required to find your way.

I've been practicing in the behavioral mental health field for 18 years. I believe that curiosity is key in therapy, recognizing that each person is unique and that getting to know their story is what will help us progress. I also believe in being genuine, and that includes humor as well as confronting the things we want to avoid. Whether life was going along fine until it wasn't, or you've had long-standing challenges. Therapy can help.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
