It all starts with listening and exploring your story, what brings you in to therapy. For many it has been a long journey, for others something may have happened just recently which needs to be addressed, it could be dealing with a problematic recurring pattern, or it may be tied to things that happened long ago in the past. I use a person-centered approach, wholly focusing on you the client in the moment, bringing my training and my own best self forward to help you overcome the suffering that brings you to the office. I provide a compassionate, centered space in which to experience learning, growing, and healing.

The world is a place of wonder, joy, and adventure, but it is often very painful and confusing, too. Anxiety, worry, grief, and relational difficulties block our experience of love, happiness, and fulfilment. I regularly find myself sharing space with people in the most difficult moments of their lives, searching together for meaning while seeking hope and joy. Often in the pain we discover a spark of life. Sometimes we simply bear witness to suffering. But we do it together.

We often find ourselves stuck in patterns that we know do not serve us, yet we feel unable to change what may be very ingrained aspects of ourselves. We might feel mentally or emotionally blocked from what we want in life, anxious about situations for reasons not fully known to us, or repeat relationships that do not work. These dynamics have often been fixtures of our lives for many years. We may struggle for years to change without success, despite great pain and a deep longing for change. These are the situations where therapy can help you find meaningful change.

I work best with people who want to explore both the "why" and the "how" — why patterns exist and how to change them. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just need to be willing to ask better questions. I help clients navigate anxiety, identity, burnout, and existential questions with a collaborative and curious approach. Together, we explore both the “why” behind patterns and the “how” to create meaningful change.

- Evening and Saturday appointments available - I have two primary priorities when we work together: 1) Building a warm and trusting relationship so that therapy is a safe and enriching experience, and 2) Finding a style of therapy most effective toward providing relief. I work primarily from an integrative/interpersonal framework but I also tailor the type of therapy to the client's needs; warm and empathetic for those needing valuable emotional support, straightforward and direct for those wanting immediate and tangible results. I take pride in my flexibility to incorporate varied approaches while still effecting therapeutic change for my client.

My practice focuses on working with survivors of trauma, people experiencing a crisis of meaning or purpose, and people working through religious/spiritual questioning, including religious trauma. I use EMDR (which is a comprehensive approach not merely a technique) to treat trauma. In working with issues of meaning and purpose, I use mindfulness and focusing-oriented strategies. With spiritual or religious issues I take a non-sectarian approach, which means I engage with you in whatever terms make sense to you.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
