The waters of life can be stormy; currents and eddies abound. Even the best of swimmers can get disoriented, tired out, or feeling lost at sea. You can find a safe harbor with Buoy 10 Psychotherapy; a place to get your breath and your bearings; a space to learn new ways to get to shore or wherever your destination might be.

Finding the right therapist matters, even though the process can feel daunting. It is understandable to feel out of sorts, isolated, or misunderstood when experiencing relationship, family, academic, or workplace stress, during a life transition, or when recovering from trauma. You may also be struggling with a death, the end of a relationship, a relocation from another state or country, adjusting to a health issue of yourself or a loved one, or being in an environment in which you feel you don't fit. It can be painful to navigate these feelings and to try to find a way forward. You don't have to do this alone.

Connecting to yourself again after betrayal can sometimes feel overwhelming. The reality you held, now nonexistent. What you thought you knew of your life and your partner is now running through your mind as a question - each moment of what came before. Repair work is precision work and can be daunting. Finding up and down in this space can be further compounded if there is previous trauma of any kind. This type of healing is such a double bind because your attachment system in your body and your threat system are not only activated by the same person but now they are at war inside.

Couples therapy slows down painful cycles of conflict, shutting down, & emotional disconnection so couples can begin to feel close, more understood, & more emotionally connected again. I also help individuals heal after toxic and emotionally harmful relationships. Together, we work to make sense of what happened - deconstruct the manipulation, gaslighting and confusion of your experience, and help you reconnect with your identity, with who You really are. As healing deepens, you can begin to let in relationships that feel safe and kind, the ones where love does not require you to disappear in order to keep it.

Maybe you have a box in your head that's labeled "Past Stuff." You put in all the things you don't like thinking about: hurts from your childhood, the memories of things you did that play on a loop in your head if you're not careful. Lately, things have been leaking out. You feel less in control of your life, and the memories that used to stay in the box are escaping. Or maybe you know the box is there and have a sense that you should sort through it, but you're not sure about doing it alone.

Does it feel like no matter what you do, things never change? You’re running on all cylinders, trying to be everything for everyone, including yourself. You tell everyone that you are fine. Managing. But you’re noticing how it’s impacting you. You realize that things need to change. Whether you're experiencing the impacts of systemic oppression, self-esteem, or relationship issues, know that you don't have to be alone in this journey. No two individuals are the same, and I tailor our sessions together to address challenges unique to you. We will work together to understand and address the root cause of those issues.

Many adults I work with are thoughtful, capable, and used to pushing through on their own. From the outside they seem to be doing well, but internally they may feel overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, or disconnected from themselves. You may have spent time trying to understand yourself and still wonder why certain struggles keep showing up. Therapy offers a space to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and explore what may be happening beneath the surface. Sometimes the experiences that shaped us continue influencing us long after they are over. Together, we can create space for your mind and body to begin responding differently.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
