I enjoy helping who are navigating a significant life transition or grappling with questions about identity, purpose, and change. Clients may be in the process of moving from adolescence to adulthood, adjusting to new responsibilities, or re-evaluating long held patterns in relationships and behavior. Often they come to me because life feels uncertain or out of balance. They sense that something needs to shift, but aren't sure where to start.

The waters of life can be stormy; currents and eddies abound. Even the best of swimmers can get disoriented, tired out, or feeling lost at sea. You can find a safe harbor with Buoy 10 Psychotherapy; a place to get your breath and your bearings; a space to learn new ways to get to shore or wherever your destination might be.

My passion is in connecting clients to their inner process - what is trying to happen - as demonstrated by their symptoms. Once we discover the issue and address it, the symptoms no longer need to be present. This approach is from a type of Jungian psychotherapy called Process Oriented Psychology, which holds as its premise that there is always something right about what is going on in our lives - our process. It also includes a mixture of some Taoism and Buddhism, and can include work with body symptoms, dreams, and relationships. I look forward to talking with you to see how I might help you resolve your personal issues.

Our beliefs, behavior patterns, and perceptions can prevent us from living a fulfilling and meaningful life. Religious? Atheist? L-G-B-T-Q-I-A+ ? You are welcome here. We all believe in something; I want you to believe primarily in yourself. We can all be pulled into where our mind would take us, which is too often into depression and anxiety or grief. These are feelings that I, too, have experienced in my life. Let me help you find ways to have a life that is not dictated by those emotions.

Adult life isn't about finding perfect choices; it's about mastering the decisions we make between imperfect options. Just like a tree in winter that must learn to grow amid freezing temperatures or face death, we encounter challenges that help make imperfect choices instead of waiting for perfect option. Mental health involves choosing the imperfect choice that moves you forward. It's more like growing a garden; you don’t grow a garden by getting rid of all the weeds, you focus on making vegetables stronger than weeds. Healing comes from developing the positive emotions beyond the strength of the negative ones.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
