When your brooding, moody teen just won't listen and your partner isn't much help either, what's a stressed out, overwhelmed parent like you to do? Pick up the phone and give me a call. Why? Because even though arguments and communication conflicts can make it feel like your family members are from an entirely different planet, there really are some secrets to bring peace, calm, and order to the chaos. I help people with
depression
who want to feel better in life. I help parents needing parenting skills. I help couples needing to find better ways of communication. I work with military, first responders and veterans to cope with life

I believe you are beautiful and worthy, and that your life can reflect great love and joy. I understand how far-fetched this can seem if you are suffering. If you hate parts of yourself, are grappling with
depression
, anxiety, or trauma symptoms, or if your relationships cause distress, it can seem as if the problem is *you*. You may feel like something is wrong with you, that you are unlovable, unworthy or broken. You might be here looking for someone to fix you, but I don't believe you need fixing. I believe you are enough. I also believe that if you're willing to do some hard work, you can come to believe it too.

I'm passionate about supporting people in finding greater connection with themselves, their world, and being present in their daily lives. We are in trying times. In counseling you can explore and have witness for whatever difficulties or questions you're living with. Frequent themes include anxiety,
depression
, grief, life transitions, fostering fulfilling relationships, guilt and shame, and questions of identity and self-expression, among others. My work is informed by how gender, race, disability, sexuality, culture, colonization, immigration, language, class, spirituality, and difficult past experiences can impact us.

I enjoy working with adults exploring relationships, family of origin concerns,
depression
, anxiety, post-traumatic stress (and growth), grief and loss, and transitions. Each client may seek therapy for different reasons, often because something in their lives has become uncomfortable, unhealthy, unsustainable, intolerable – but each client is so much more than their problem. I've worked with everyone from high school dropouts to combat veterans to long term care residents, and everyone in between ... In every one I see another facet of the best of what it means to be human, and I love to show up and see what we learn together.

Suffering the impacts of trauma, being entangled in a web of codependency, or sinking into stagnating
depression
, can cause marked distress and dysfunction in our daily lives. Sometimes our own attempts at self-medicating can further complicate matters. If we have experienced a significant loss, it may be hard to even imagine an end to the pain and it may be rather difficult to trust in any process of change. Fear and shame can often prevent us from reaching out, convincing us this is an unyielding fate.

In the words of Thoreau, "Go confidently . . . live the life you've imagined." Do you often wish you were more confident, less anxious, no longer feeling
depressed
-- or stuck? Would you like to better understand yourself and others? Few things help more in this process than a relationship with a trusted and skilled therapist. With over 30 years experience, I am committed to the highest standards in comprehensive mental health care. I work with individuals and couples to help heal
depression
, relieve anxiety, reduce stress, improve relationships, process grief and loss, and navigate painful or challenging life transitions.

*Accepting new clients* The journey to healing begins with a desire to feel better. Together, we’ll work to discover what “better” looks like and what can be done to achieve it. There are many ways life shows us we are stuck in our own story; addiction,
depression
, anxiety, anger and many other indicators can be present when we’re experiencing such pain. How did we get here? How do we get out? What are we holding onto? Who can we not let go?

Depression
. Anxiety. Trauma. Grief. If only we could just flip a switch to turn them off! Too often others say "You shouldn't feel that way" or "Get over it." No one chooses to be unhappy. And though there is no on-off switch for our thoughts and emotions, with the right help we can change rebuild our our lives so we are really living. Throughout my time in practice, I've found that what helps most is warmth, respect, careful listening and a collaborative approach that fits the treatment to the person.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
