People come to therapy for many reasons, but most are in pain and just want to feel better. Still, asking for help is hard. So congratulations on taking the first step. In today's complex world many struggle with relationship problems, depression, anxiety and work-related stress. Life is messy. Human beings are complicated, full of paradoxes. Feelings are unpredictable and irrational. It’s no wonder relationships, especially with those most important to us, can be so challenging. To help with your particular concern, I can offer individual therapy, EMDR (often used for trauma and PTSD), and/or couples counseling.

I work with clients dealing with PTSD, anxiety , depression, relational issues and parenting challenges.
Whether you have been struggling for a long time or recently found yourself in need of extra support, I am here to help. My first goal in therapy is to join with you in the fact that we are all imperfect human beings trying to do our best. I see therapy as an opportunity to learn more about yourself and your experiences, to learn to cope with life's inevitable challenges, to feel more grounded and connected to your sense of self, and to create a more fulfilling life.

Does life feel out of control? The winds of depression, anxiety , relationship distress, emotional and physical infidelity, grief, hopelessness and/or loneliness can make us feel like we don’t have any control over our lives. We cannot direct these winds, but I can help you learn how to adjust your sails. These adjustments will lead you to finding a sense of purpose and direction in your life. Recognizing your value and strength will empower you to be able to face whatever storms might rage. Change is facilitated by understanding our emotions and how they affect not only us, but our relationships as well.

Getting to the heart of intense emotions and changing the status quo can be frightening. Yet, so is the idea of remaining in a place that is no longer sustainable. You know it’s time to stop trying to fill that void with what is no longer working. It can be very difficult to step out of expectations and into your authentic self. The decision to seek professional therapy and create movement in your life says you are ready. Anxiety , depression, compulsive behaviors and negative relationship patterns can become so overwhelming that we feel distrust in everything, especially ourselves.

I believe you are beautiful and worthy, and that your life can reflect great love and joy. I understand how far-fetched this can seem if you are suffering. If you hate parts of yourself, are grappling with depression, anxiety , or trauma symptoms, or if your relationships cause distress, it can seem as if the problem is *you*. You may feel like something is wrong with you, that you are unlovable, unworthy or broken. You might be here looking for someone to fix you, but I don't believe you need fixing. I believe you are enough. I also believe that if you're willing to do some hard work, you can come to believe it too.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
