In practice since 1994, as a therapist I have learned many ways of approaching issues with clients and can really tailor to your needs and what works best for you. The agenda for therapy is set by you. I also have a wide array of experience working with various issues. I often use EMDR which is considered the treatment of choice for
PTSD
and also very effective with panic attacks, phobias, performance issues, etc. I believe that no one has to be stuck with the ways they were injured in life.

Do you want to create a more compassionate and meaningful relationship with yourself? Are there parts of you that are holding onto pain from
trauma
and oppression that long to be cared for and witnessed? Do you want to heal old and unhelpful patterns, be more authentic and explore your life from a grounded perspective? I work with clients to deepen, heal, and expand their most important relationship: the relationship with themselves. Grief, anxiety, anger, pain, and uncertainty are natural parts of being human, however, your relationship to these emotions can make all the difference in how you experience them.

My specialty is working from a
trauma
informed social justice lens to help the clients understand their place in the world and the role they play in it.
I work with clients who are ready for transformative work. My focus is to guide each client/s towards building a sense of competency, resourcefulness and helping them recognize that they hold the key to their own healing. I will explore current behaviors and life situations with clients and help them figure out which ones are inhibiting progress, which ones are serving them, and which are ready to be evolved into something else. I also like to look at the past, and family of origin to find what the patterns are that are ready to be broken and how to move forward in an empowered way. I help clients bring to life their next self.

I support families, adults and elders in navigating difficult times more gracefully. As we rush through our busy lives, we can feel lost and disconnected from our best selves. We can even become so immersed in our negative culture that we feel a deep sense of hopelessness. We can forget that we are smart, strong, tenacious and resilient. I can help you bring a greater sense of purpose and hope into your life.

My focus as a therapist is on helping survivors of traumatic experiences to heal and address the many ways that early abuse and neglect can impact adult life. You may have noticed posttraumatic symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, nightmares, always feeling on guard, not being able to remember things you feel you should, or overly negative beliefs about yourself and the world. You may have been dealing with the symptoms for so long that they seem like a part of you- unhelpful patterns, depression, anxiety, addiction, career, relationship or parenting problems and difficulty making desired life changes. Things can be different!

Life is an ongoing journey of growth and opportunity. Throughout these opportunities, we are met with challenges. Often these challenges are the catalyst for the growth opportunities we were not necessarily seeking. I believe it is in these moments that we get to dig deep, transform, and come out on the other side victorious, even if we had to get there kicking and screaming. We are resilient people, and sometimes we need to be reminded of that. My role as a therapist is to support my clients and challenge them to keep putting forth the effort and to claim the victory that is waiting for them on the other side of their challenges.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
