Some people ask why I became a couples therapist, and my response is: "I was born a therapist." I enjoy the uniqueness of each client and their situation, how they have attempted to solve their problems, and how they are stuck. There are many situations that are similar among clients, but the interplay with each individual and their situation is infinite. Congruency for me is key. Being the person I ask others to be, holding each person with tenderness and creativity while we move toward their goals is transformative in the therapeutic process.

Psychological health and well being is not about all people fitting into a narrow category that someone labels "functional." It is about using your unique psychological profile in such a way as to maximize the gifts in it and in those attributes with which you have to offer the world something of what makes you unique. If you can do that, you tend to be happier and more fulfilled regardless of the "diagnosis" you may have been given. And the world tends to be happier, too.

Therapy is a challenging process of self-discovery. It requires curiosity, honesty, vulnerability, persistence and courage. In this process I am looking to partner with individuals who are tired of feeling unsuccessful and out of place in their own life and who are ready to commit to their own healing. I am fully bi-lingual/bi-cultural, and bring to my practice the wealth and flavor of 25 years of many modalities and experience, working with people from around the world.

I support clients in identifying their own strengths, setting goals, and learning skills to meet life's challenges. Beginning a personal growth journey takes courage, as it involves acknowledging and addressing personal challenges and vulnerabilities, and committing to the process of self-exploration and change. I work collaboratively with clients to create a safe space and tailor sessions, goals and coping skills to their individual needs. My approach often includes elements from a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities which can include CBT, DBT, IFS, family-based approaches using FBT and EFF, and art therapy.

I see a flourishing life as one that affirms your own dignity along with the dignity of those around you.

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, teens and families and helping them to improve the quality of their lives and their relationships. Common issues I work with are anxiety, depression, relationship issues like unhealthy communication patterns, low self-esteem and limiting beliefs like, "I'm not good enough", "I can't get what I want", "I don't deserve love", "I can't stand it. Life and love are too painful." Many of the above keep us feeling stuck and my role is to help people breakthrough these issues. Often the issues have been around for years and people need more support and intervention to create lasting change.

I collaborate with clients to overcome the disabling symptoms and behavior patterns caused by trauma and to reclaim a sense of safety, security, self-worth and serenity. Together we work through the issues causing deep pain and holding you back from a healthy, happy, hopeful life. Trauma survivors often have symptoms - depression, irritability, insomnia, mistrust, chronic pain, compulsive behavior, loss of sense of self - rather than memories.  For the person suffering from trauma, just being is an act of bravery. Working toward healing is a courageous step.

I work with individuals using an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approach. I operate from a humanistic existential theoretical orientation, meaning I believe therapy is a collaborative and relational process, and I value you for your inherent worth and dignity beyond your circumstances or behavior. I believe, no matter your wounds, you have the capacity and the potential to heal.

I enjoy working with teens, adults, couples and families, and I believe in the healing power of relationships: no matter the wounds, if all parties are willing to heal, I will help. In today’s changing environment, we are often disconnected and fragmented; this can be seen and felt on both micro and macro levels, contributing to high levels of stress and anxiety. I am fiercely committed to restoring essential connections in our relationships with one another, our environment and mother earth. One of my primary goals is helping others achieve optimal performance in personal, relational, and professional areas of one’s life.

I have worked with children, adolescents, adults and families for over 30 years. The decision to enter counseling is often a difficult one, but the rewards from a positive and productive experience are abundant. There are challenges at every stage of life that are difficult to manage without support and good information. My goal is to help every client discover what will work best for their situation in the most efficient and respectful process possible. All of us function best when we know what we want and manage our behavior to reach those goals. Good therapy is worth the investment.

How can I find a therapist in Kirkland?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
