I am the Agency Psychologist for the Center for Systematic Therapy and Research Services (CSTARS). I work full-time after a career in research (University of Washington 1987-2004) and faculty appointment (John's Hopkins, Department of Mental Health [2004-2007]). I currently focus on directing two clinical programs with Clinical Director Melissa Byrd: 1) Relapse Prevention for advanced recovery in addiction and codependency (Group and Individual), 2) Sexual Victimization recovery from childhood and young adult PTSD (Group and Individual). I conduct neurodevelopmental assessments for Dr. Stumme-Parks' work with CSTARS' ADHD clients.

I have been working in counseling and mental health for over 30 years. In my practice, I work with both couples and individuals. Currently, I mainly work with couples using Gottman Method Couples Therapy. I like to focus on specific changes that my clients want in their lives, build on skills and mitigate the impact of old emotional and behavioral habits that no longer serve life as it is now. It is important to look at all aspects of life: mental, emotional, behavioral and spiritual; quality of relationships, even diet and exercise, in building a positive, satisfying and fulfilling life.

My intention is to be a neutral third party with whom a client can express themselves free of judgment, reflect on their own thoughts and experiences, and find their own direction. I strive to understand the person before me from their own perspective based on their unique values, cultural beliefs, and daily stresses and concerns. I believe someone’s difficulties are not always due to abnormal psychopathology but can arise as a normal reaction to an abnormal situation.

The burden's of trauma can impact your love life, work life, friendships and how you see yourself in the world. I believe each person is doing the very best they can. Within each client are a set of strengths I look for to build on, and areas of difficulty I look to support and strengthen. I want to work together to come up with strategies which are tailored to you. I work with military families, couples, adults, teens(12+), and foster youth with various challenges. I also provide private pay reintegration/reunification counseling. I'm licensed in WA and ID. I am an approved Clinical Supervisor in WA.

I am passionate about guiding my clients through a process of self-discovery, helping them learn about their strengths and weaknesses, and assisting them in developing more effective coping skills and communication techniques. I use multiple modalities of counseling, teaching, learning, and healing, and incorporate various psycho-social-educational models within a culture and gender sensitive framework. My approach to therapy is warm, non-judgmental, collaborative, and conversational. I generally work from family systems, structural and symbolic experiential theoretical orientations. I use elements of play therapy and story telling in my work with children.
