Hi! Samantha Johnson, QCSW, LICSW. I started into counseling when I was just a youngen’, so now I have 14 years of experience! But don’t worry, I am not too old to understand. I work with people who are suffering. I understand how difficult life can get and want to do anything I can to try to help you find better days. I have worked in ‘discrete addictions programs’ to community mental health and few in between. I have been trained in Gestalt, Motivational Interviewing, Play Therapy, Reality Therapy and CBT. My approach is simple, where are you? And where do you want to be? Then is it just figuring out how to reach those goals.

I utilize a framework known as Reality Therapy with my clients, which is based on how each individual sees, perceives, and walks through the world.
My passion lies in working with both youth and adults alike and believe that counseling offers an opportunity to reflect on the current challenges that you may be experiencing in life, and working together with you on moving forward. In particular I have a heart and passion for working with youth and young adults of color. I believe that racial identity is linked to every aspect of daily lives for people of color and often leads to ongoing symptoms of stress and anxiety. I love working with individuals of all races and ethnicities, including folks who identify as children of immigrants.

Hi! My name is Melissa Lowry. I am so honored and humbled that you have chosen to work with me. You have taken the first step and you are amazing! But, first, know that confidentiality, collaboration, and safety are essential for working with my clients. You are a priority, not a number. When we are in session, we work together; you are in charge of your care and treatment. Counseling is about you; healing is about you; I am here to help you with the tools on that journey.I work with clients where they are in the moment. There is no specific timeframe for healing in therapy, and no two people are the same; mindfulness, understanding

Our mind-body connection is extremely powerful. When we are stressed, we might experience bodily discomfort and/or mental health concerns that cause difficulty functioning in everyday life. This is completely normal! I encourage you to close your eyes and listen for two to three minutes. Do you hear that little voice in your head? It takes awareness and practice to navigate that little voice, that speaks to us 24/7, for it to assist in our healing, growth, and self-regulation.

It’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of highs and lows. This cycle can result in feelings of overwhelm and avoidance, making it seem easier to reach for coping strategies that are not sustainable. This could be taking it out on the ones we live the most or neglecting ourselves. Sometimes, we need someone to provide a listening ear, reflection, and honest feedback to allow us to make necessary changes in our lives and relationships.

I consider the counseling relationship to be a partnership in which one seeks an understanding of the problems that are affecting one's life and learns of strategies that will help alleviate them. Problems are manifested in anxiety, depression, or other stress-related problems such as sleeplessness, tension and the inability to enjoy life, family or activities. ALL are attempts to cope with problems. Since this partnership is based on trust and mutual respect, it is important that the client meet a professional who can best address those problems, and has the experience to know when and how to implement changes.

Life does not discriminate when it comes to stress, trauma, and pain. We should not bear life's burdens alone, as we all need to be heard, understood, and appreciated. Whether this is your first time seeking counseling or simply looking for a change, know you are doing the right thing for yourself. I love to work with those in need of connection, nurture, and growth. I do so through a style that is direct, yet compassionate, firm, yet empathetic, practical, yet supportive. As your therapist, I work alongside you to provide individualized support based on your presenting problems, needs, and therapeutic goals.

As a clinician, I believe therapy looks different for everyone and there is no 'one-size fits most' approach. Therapy should be client-centered, strengths-based, trauma-informed, and focused on what you hope to get out each session. I believe in meeting my clients where they are and develop an individualized treatment plan with each client. In sessions, I utilize a variety of interventions, including evidence based approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

Reality Therapy

Is reality therapy evidence-based?

Reality therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapies. However, some research does indicate that reality therapy might be helpful for people with addiction, and may be effective in treating social anxiety in young people.

How long does reality therapy last?

Reality therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Reality therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of reality therapy long after treatment has ended.

Does reality therapy work?

Reality therapy can help a person manage concerns such as eating disorders, addiction, substance use, anxiety, phobias, and relationship difficulties. This type of therapy encourages a person to be accountable for their behaviors. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure. Reality therapy can be useful in one-on-one therapy or in group sessions. This method may be used with children, families, and adults.

What are the limitations of reality therapy?

This therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the therapist focuses on choices made by the individual in the present day. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over others. This format may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every client.
