Often the safest way we cope with the aftershock of trauma is to create a workable persona or "protector," vigilantly committed to keeping us safe by avoiding further emotional injury at any cost. As adults, day-to-day challenges trigger our protective parts with anxiety-provoking situations that elicit reactive, shielding responses, & keep us stuck looping in repetitive cycles. While these protective defenses with their "never again" mantra had reliably sheltered our vulnerability in the past, today they function as painful reminders of lingering wounds and barriers to joyful, meaningful connection with others.

For many that have made the decision to go to therapy, life has gone in such a way that it has become unbearable. Things have not gone right for some time, and it is unclear in what direction to go next. My position is that therapy should be the space in which you are given the opportunity to explore your life in the way that you see fit. Drawing from interpersonal dynamics, existential thought, and hu manistic perspectives, my approach is one that focuses on you in the context of your world. How we make sense of who we are can be a complicated process, and it's important to know where we stand in a world of unknowns.

I have had extensive experience in work with clients' interpersonal communication, self-efficacy, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and some anger management.
Individuals, couples and families are all seen as my ideal client. I typically see clients from the ages of 13 and up, but I do make some exceptions. Clients who are having difficulties with communicating their emotions, identifying their strengths and their core self, or having dysfunctional dyadic or family patterns are clients who I know I can help. Clients coming regularly and genuinely working with me to accomplish the goals we set out at the beginning of therapy are ideal. If you want to better yourself in any way, shape or form, I will be the person who will try my best to help you become the better self you aspire to be.

I thrive on helping others heal and get to where they want to be in life. I feel that people usually come to therapy because something is not working in their life and change needs to happen but they are not sure how. I am passionate about my work and strive to help others every day. I am flexible with my approach as we are all different and I will follow your lead with what works best for you. I think that humor and connection are very important in a therapeutic relationship so that we can laugh and cry and I am able to push you at times to help you reach your goals.

I work with people to help them understand themselves better so they can manage their thoughts and emotions which sometimes drive behaviors they do not want.
Understanding our emotions is a skill we all must learn to prevent relationship conflict and to promote inner peace. There are reasons we have the deep feelings we experience. We just need to understand why we have our feelings and what causes us to suffer so much from them. We suffer from our emotions because something else is going on inside of us that we may not understand. It does not need to be this way. You can learn to know yourself better, sooth your emotions and improve your relationships with partners, kids, co-workers and friends.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
