My ideal client is someone that is trying to figure out how to thrive in their life. Building deeper understanding of how their past is connected to their current and future self. My client wants to feel better, have deeper connections and find their own happiness. Often my client sees the good in others and will bend over backward for their family, friends and coworkers, but finds, it’s hard to treat themselves as well as everyone else. My client might also be a family member of a service member, or a service member or veteran themselves, trying to wrestle with the intricacies of military culture, deployments, high ops tempo…

Navigating a full human experience can feel like both a blessing and an incredible challenge. I know this from over a decade's worth of professional experience in helping people move through the complexities of their personal lives and being a human myself. Over the years, I've worked alongside all age demographics of people from many different backgrounds in addressing trauma, anxiety, depression, attachment, and relational issues, to name a few. Starting therapy is a great step in understanding our humanness and receiving support, understanding, and education on where we can start this journey towards change.

First, I believe it is my duty to be able to actively listen to my client, obtain a good understanding of where they are and where they want to go. Together, we will move you and/or your team or organization in the desired direction to reach your goals. As a young man growing up in North Chicago, I quickly learned that life is full of rewards and upsets, if I allowed it to happen. At 3 months old, I was abandoned by my mother, left inside of a garbage can in an alley waiting to die. However, life had other plans for me. A passerby heard my faint cries and pulled me from the garbage can. Later, I was adopted but went on to experience years of physical and emotional abuse by my adopted mother. At the age of 12, I ran away from home and was placed in foster care. I was adopted again, but I experienced more mental and physical abuse. I dropped out of the 9th grade and began running away again. At the age of 16, the authorities declared me an emancipated teenager. With a story like mine, you would probably think there was no hope for finding happiness or for finding quality of life. However, I have learned to use my negative experiences as a testimony to reach out and help others.

Anxiety is awful. Most people just do not understand how difficult it is to live with chronic worry, panic attacks, or obsessive thoughts and unwanted behavior. Gladly, most people will never have to know how horrible it is to have nagging obsessive thoughts, or fear panicking in public places. The variety of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) like Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) are quite effective in increasing distress tolerance, reducing anxiety, and eliminating the dysfunctional behaviors that accompany it.

Many people these days find themselves empty and alone. Is this you? Maybe you feel stuck in your relationship, or recently experienced a break-up. Perhaps you are overwhelmed with a difficult life transition, or you are suffering from past trauma. Our wounds can provide a doorway to becoming our best and most authentic selves. Our journey to mental health begins with a single, yet often difficult step. I specialize in assisting individuals who are experiencing anxiety, depression, anger, negative self-image as well as other symptoms holding us back from being our best and living a fulfilling life.

Not accepting new clients at this time - I believe that people make sense in the context of their story and that the key to healing is within each one of us. My approach to therapy has evolved over the years as I began understanding that what most people are looking for is someone who can help them with a deeper understanding of how they became exactly who they are today.

For me, psychotherapy is an intimate undertaking and a very personal journey. In my work, I recognize that each person comes with a unique personal history and life circumstances as well as unique hopes, dreams, and desires. Most of us, most of the time, can be resourceful and creative in coping with life challenges. There are times, however, when internal or external pressures get the best of us, leaving us depleted, overwhelmed, confused, or unwell. I offer a safe space where the work of self-exploration and transformation can occur, and where healing and the journey toward self-acceptance and well-being can take place.

I enjoy working with adults exploring relationships, family of origin concerns, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress (and growth), grief and loss, and transitions. Each client may seek therapy for different reasons, often because something in their lives has become uncomfortable, unhealthy, unsustainable, intolerable – but each client is so much more than their problem. I've worked with everyone from high school dropouts to combat veterans to long term care residents, and everyone in between ... In every one I see another facet of the best of what it means to be human, and I love to show up and see what we learn together.

Many of my clients experience worries about food and body, eating disorders, anxiety, gender dysphoria, religious and other trauma or executive functioning issues that impact their ability to manage life in a way that feels sustainable. I offer warm support and understanding from the perspective a person with these lived experiences and specialized training necessary to provide helpful treatment. Your therapy journey should be born out of what you love. I like to find the places where you connect with life - hobbies, fandoms, stories, social circles - and then use those to create recovery narratives that are right for you.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Graham?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
