Tern Christian Counseling
Counselor, PhD, MDiv, LMHC

Federal Way, WA 98003
We live in stressful times and many of my clients come to me because I specialize in many areas and have years of counseling experience from a nonjudgemental Christian perspective. They need hope and guidance to overcome those issues that seem impossible. Children are navigating a world full of conflict and uncertainty. Through talking with them and play therapy we get to the critical issues. Men are hesitant to seek counseling because many times their issue has to do with sex. Pornography has saturated our world and is readily available. I wrote Conquering Pornography, a 5-star book, on how to overcome this addiction.

7/1/2026 - Openings for +individual clients+. One of the most important parts of therapy is forming a trusting and compassionate therapeutic relationship. From that, my approach is person-centered. Focusing on an understanding of your feelings, beliefs, thoughts, behaviors, experiences and goals. Providing a safe space for you to explore, process, grow, challenge yourself and make the changes you want. I will walk along side you, providing support, skill building and at times asking the challenging questions that often are left unsaid, make us uncomfortable, and that in the end, help us most to grow into who we want to be.

In my experience, healing and transformation is a process of "unearthing" existing strengths, tools, and self-compassion that may have been lost through adverse experiences, trauma, or chronic mental health challenges. While learning new coping skills is important, I believe much of the medicine for healing our own wounds exists within us. I think good therapy requires a 'remembering' of the old gifts and integrating the 'new' tools. I believe that clients are the most valuable wisdom-holders in the therapy space. I hope to align with my clients to tap into their own inner wisdom to reach their goals, whatever those may be.

Life doesn't always unfold the way we expected. You may be navigating anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship challenges, a major life transition, or the lasting impact of family patterns that no longer serve you. As a first-generation American, I understand the complexity of balancing culture, expectations, identity, and belonging. I've lived enough life to know how much people can carry, often quietly and for a long time. Together, we'll slow things down, make sense of what you're carrying, and create space for meaningful change.

You may be carrying religious or developmental trauma, or experiences that don’t fully make sense but have left you feeling disconnected from yourself or the world. Many of my clients feel overwhelmed, anxious, shut down, or stuck, even after doing a lot of inner work or prior therapy. Some are neurodivergent (Autism/ADHD) and haven’t found approaches that truly fit. You may be longing for relief, clarity, and a way to feel like yourself again. Together, we build stability and support, then gently work with what’s ready so your system can shift without overwhelm.

When I hear the words "ideal client," I immediately think about someone who is willing to change. This is someone who is wanting to work on themselves and is ready to take "personal inventory." Someone who is open, honest, and vulnerable with themselves and their therapist. A client who is willing to engage and participate in the process of bettering themselves. We can work on managing stress, day to day challenges, or learning coping skills. We will work together on a therapeutic approach that is right for you.
