Thirty four years ago, when I began to practice, I was fascinated by the resiliency of people individually, and their family systems. I have worked with people from many different backgrounds, with many different challenges. My approach to therapy is down-to-earth and uncomplicated. Most often I lean heavily into Trust Based Relational Interventions (TBRI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Neurofunctional Therapies. I look at challenges from several viewpoints and work with the client to help them identify their strengths within to address their own unique concerns.

When we’re carrying anxiety, grief, trauma, chronic pain, or the weight of constantly trying to “hold it together,” it can impact everything—your relationships, your self-esteem, your sense of identity, and your ability to feel hopeful about the future.
My approach is collaborative, affirming, and grounded in a person-centered foundation—meaning I believe you are the expert on your own life, and therapy should feel like a space where you can show up fully as yourself. I integrate EMDR, somatic-based models, and parts work to support healing that isn’t just intellectual, but also felt in the body.

I also offer therapy to those who are having difficulty adjusting to new diagnoses or are having difficulty managing health-related issues, like chronic pain.
Strength and fortitude can be found inside every one of us. While you might feel like you can manage your ups and downs alone because you are strong or don’t feel you deserve assistance, sometimes it is beneficial to reach out for help. By clarifying what is most important in your life, I could help you navigate your troubles, whether it is adjusting to a new medical diagnosis, dealing with anxious thoughts, a big life change, or dealing with discrimination. While it is easy to feel broken when asking for help, I believe people are not broken but sometimes become stuck. Let's work together to move you forward.

Many struggle with shame, envy, and the “what ifs” that cause stress in our day to day lives. We feel pressure from the internet to “have more, be more, do more.” We can dismantle those beliefs, build ourselves back up, and be kinder to ourselves. I do my best work with men, individuals, and couples looking for a direct, "down to earth" style that helps create a comfortable space to discuss your therapy goals. My couples work includes learning to regulate emotions, respond with compassion, and understand your partner's needs and desires.

My approach to therapy is collaborative and strengths-based, with a specialization in somatic and attachment based EMDR, complex trauma, systemic oppression, culture, and relationships. I especially love working with women, LGBT people, immigrants, and people of color who are wanting to process trauma, have a better understanding of self, and learn to navigate the world in a more sustainable way. I am a Black/biracial lesbian with a diagnosis of ADHD and bipolar disorder that aims to provide inclusive care to individuals that have historically been unable to access adequate mental health care from providers with a shared identity.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
