I work with people facing all sorts of struggles. Some of the most common issues I help with include depression, anxiety, identity formation, and relationship problems between couples or within families. I have a lot of experience in working with conflict between children and adolescents and their parents. I believe in the importance of helping people to understand the roots of their behaviors. I combine therapeutic styles based on what my clients want and need.

My name is Savannah Bowden, LCMHCA. I approach counseling from a psychodynamic lens while integrating a humanistic client-centered approach. I draw from aspects of other theories as needed to provide the best care to you, including Internal Family Systems (IFS) and behavioral therapy. The therapy space is designed to be a safe space for you to use however you feel is best. In our sessions you will be encouraged to speak freely of anything that comes to mind and together we will explore these thoughts and early memories.

My therapeutic approach is psychodynamic and relational, which means I'm interested in helping you safely explore the ways in which your personal history, from early childhood onward, may still be influencing your emotions, coping patterns and relationships. I'll help you tend to your feelings and memories so that you'll come to know yourself better and develop the capacity for compassionate self-care. Throughout our time together, I'll pay special attention to our therapeutic connection, as I believe our relationship can serve as a rich resource for your authentic recovery and well-being.

1 in 5 women will experience a clinical mood or anxiety disorder during and/or after pregnancy. Between 25-34% of women report their births as traumatic. Following the birth, some go on to develop Postpartum PTSD. The earlier there is support during this vulnerable and often overwhelming time, the adjustment to motherhood is less bumpy. I work with women (and their partners) to manage anxiety, depression, fear around motherhood and birth, postpartum PTSD and planning for postpartum support. I offer support during pregnancy and postpartum in a couple different ways. Traditional therapy, short-term home visits, or consulting.

Life's stressors can be overwhelming. Therapy shows us new ways of being and engaging through practicing adaptive skills and mindfulness. I help my clients uncover connections between past experiences that shape their current ways of coping. This leads to the ability to recognize inner strengths, identify and embrace discomfort, and cultivate self-compassion to find peace and true connection. With empathetic listening in a safe environment, I strive to be my client’s ally. I use cognitive and somatic modalities to connect mind and body and tailor my approach to your needs, even using humor when appropriate!

People seek help for many reasons such as depressed mood, chronic loneliness, dread and isolation, stormy relationships, and loss. I strongly believe that an under-the-surface approach most effectively alleviates suffering, promotes growth, healing and self-understanding. Parents may bring their child for treatment because of disruptions in the home or school. Through play therapy (and supporting the parents) the behaviors and symptoms can be understood and worked with, leading to change and ultimately, a return to the normal developmental path.

I believe that a solid, collaborative relationship between client and therapist makes a powerful difference. As a team, we will find the parts of your history that hinder you, and the strengths that you may not know. With this understanding, I can help you write a new chapter in a far better story.
Clients tell me that they feel genuine care and understanding from me, plus insight that creates meaning from the past and hope for the future.
