I am a licensed independent clinical social worker who specializes in working with youth and young adults. I have experience with trauma (including cPTSD), anxiety, depression , life transitions, and identity formation. My style is warm, humanistic, and collaborative, and I believe in humor as a great tool for healing and connection. I also believe in bringing our authentic selves into the therapy room and love to incorporate hobbies and interests into treatment. As an example, I'm trained in therapeutically-applied roleplaying games (like Dungeons & Dragons).

For 20+ years I have been providing individual psychotherapy. You might be thinking about therapy because you have a sense that something is wrong or something hurts. Sometimes all you know is you have not felt happy for a long time. Perhaps you are experiencing confusion about a relationship or are having anxiety or depression . You have Bipolar Disorder or ADHD and want help beyond medications. Perhaps you are going through a transition such as divorce. You may find yourself up against the "same old problems" at work or home. You may be trying to manage trauma. I can help.

Within this perspective, I can help you bring into awareness common issues of trauma, anxiety, depression , addiction, relationship issues, and mental health concerns that could be keeping you stuck or hurting.
You may be in a space and time in your life where you are ready to begin therapy for the first time or maybe you are moving toward it again. Whatever the case may be, you are brave to be caring for yourself by searching for support in this capacity. Collaboratively in therapy we will begin to create a window into seeing the narrative of your story. Navigating your own personal story is a way to begin to transition toward the life you desire and long for.

I work with people struggling with anxiety and depression ; inaccurate self-talk; lack of self care; relationships with Self and Others; dating, break-ups and premarital stages; martial discord; parents of young children; adolescent rebellion; unmotivated college students; life transitions; midlife assessment (aka, mid-life crisis).
I tend to be more pragmatic, excelling in the "Now What?" stage. I am solution-focused and action-oriented providing applicable skills and cognitive understanding of "why do I behave the way I do?!". Yet I have been successful with even the resistant clientele by providing patience for their trust development, a judgment free arena, and pacing with the clients' personal momentum. I have already worked in two different private practices since my graduation from Seattle Pacific University back in 2006, right here in Edmonds, Washington. I have gleaned enough experience and confidence to provide you a mental health service to trust.

I am a psychotherapist in private practice treating teens and adults experiencing depression , anxiety, or distress, parents wanting a greater sense of family well-being and adults wanting a deeper connection with the meaning and direction of their lives.
Mindfulness and self-compassion are the key elements of the work I do. I work with adults and teens and we determine together the treatment modalities that would best serve. I am well-versed in holistic, spiritual and more medical approaches to the treatment of anxiety and depression and use a broad range of therapeutic models to help clients experience more health and well-being in their lives. Cognitive-behavioral, emotion-focused, narrative, solution-focused and existential therapies are some of the clinical techniques used in my practice.

My therapeutic approach is psychodynamic and relational, which means I'm interested in helping you safely explore the ways in which your personal history, from early childhood onward, may still be influencing your emotions, coping patterns and relationships. I'll help you tend to your feelings and memories so that you'll come to know yourself better and develop the capacity for compassionate self-care. Throughout our time together, I'll pay special attention to our therapeutic connection, as I believe our relationship can serve as a rich resource for your authentic recovery and well-being.

Working with a broad spectrum of clients dealing with such issues as grief, loss, trauma, shame, depression , anxiety, stress management, identity issues, and relational problems, my desire is to help them to move beyond merely coping with these issues and to find true healing and freedom and, ultimately, to live more whole, fulfilling, and flourishing lives.
*Currently accepting new patients* Hi, there! I'm Ian. If you are feeling down, anxious, or stuck or are struggling in your relationships, I would like to help. I believe that meaningful personal connection—feeling understood, accepted, & loved—is at the heart of well-being, so my desire is to provide a genuine, warm, & safe presence in which my clients feel comfortable sharing their stories & exploring how their past has shaped them & their experience of the present. Though I use a psychodynamic approach, I tailor my approach to meet my clients' needs, integrating techniques from various approaches like CBT, gestalt, & mindfulness.

Depression Therapists
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
