Are you looking for someone who can understand what it's like living between worlds? Whether that's within the queer and LGBTQIA+ communities, disability and chronic illness communities, separation from the family you were born into, or something else - I want to work with you to make sense of that experience and explore your next steps. I share those experiences myself and have focused my work on queer, neurodivergent, and disabled clients, because we often struggle to relate to the world around us.

I specialize in Acceptance & Commitment Training ( ACT), Practical Functional Assessment/Skills-Based Treatment, and sometimes use a hybrid model that combines both therapeutic approaches.
I am a Licensed Behavior Analyst practicing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
ABA is an evidenced-based approach to behavior change. I support our neurodivergent communities by making ABA with a trauma-informed approach, more accessible and individualized. I lead with the assumption that each client I work with has had trauma that inhibited their emotional growth, skill development, and the ability to set boundaries, or form trusting relationships. Compassionate care is an essential component of my practice, where trust is built and skills are practiced in a safe space, both physically and emotionally.

For OCD, I use both the gold standard of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), along with ACT and Inference-based CBT (I-CBT), a newer treatment approach that focuses on reasoning structure instead of exposures..
Some of my clients find me after a lifetime of perfectionism and self-judgement, working too hard to make everything seem okay from the outside and paying too high a price for doing it. Some find me because intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors are starting to take over their lives. Some find me because they have experienced, or witnessed, something horrific. Some find me after procrastination and paralysis have made them question their own abilities and robbed them of opportunities. And some find me because they feel shame and anguish around sex or their bodies. I am an expert at helping people untie these knots.

My work is grounded in evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, ACT, and Behavioral Activation, but I aim to make therapy feel natural, not scripted.
I tend to work best with young adults, adolescents, and emerging professionals who are navigating anxiety, self-doubt, identity questions, and life transitions. Some are coming in with a clear sense of what’s going wrong, others might just know they’re not feeling like themselves lately and want a space to figure that out.
Whether it’s social anxiety, self-harm, school or work avoidance, lingering trauma, or family stress; my goal is to help clients move toward more grounded, intentional lives. I don’t expect you to show up with the perfect language for what’s going on. We’ll figure that out together.

Hi, my name is Mariel, and I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate (LMHCA) who believes in creating a space where you can come as you are—no pressure to have it all figured out. I’m here to walk alongside you with compassion, authenticity, and honesty as you navigate whatever season you’re in. I believe therapy should be a space where you don’t have to perform or hold it all together—where you can be real, explore what’s weighing on you, and begin to feel understood in a new way.

Sometimes we struggle to make meaning where life has thrown us a curveball: a death, a divorce, coming out, or even a pandemic. It’s overwhelming trying to bring order to chaos, at times having to impossibly reconcile competing truths. “It gets better” fails to appreciate the acute pain of the moment, only going so far in moving the needle towards hope. In an age where humans are increasingly polarized, buoyed by deeply held beliefs, there remains a need for something more than personal happiness alone. As a relational Therapist, I help clients find sustainable wellness; prioritizing relationship with self and others over ideology.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
