I specialize in working with trauma survivors; traumatic events live at the base of most mental health struggles such as; PTSD, ADHD, Co-dependence, Depression, Anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Narcissism; to name a few.
“The fundamental principle in care of the soul is that the soul needs tending. If we do not tend to things in their suffering, and decay, we risk living the life of the walking dead.” ~Thomas Moore. As I acquire experience as a therapist, it has become apparent that the therapeutic relationship between the counselor and the client is crucial to the success of the client. Counseling is based on trust and the professional connection, and through that connection, the counseling session becomes a co-creation that can unlock the client’s barriers to a fulfilling life.

I am a clinical social worker and therapist licensed in the state of Washington. In my practice, I see children, adolescents and adults of all ages who may be experiencing difficulties within themselves or in their relationships with others or may be seeking a journey or self-growth and change. My style is based on the belief that in order to best assist my clients in reaching their goals during the psychotherapeutic process, I need to know when to listen attentively, when to offer practical advice and when to bring attention to deeper internal conflicts that may cause suffering.

These scars can show up as depression, anxiety, anger, and even thoughts of suicide.
When things happen to us, our bodies hold residual memories of those events. We may forget about it, believe we have moved on, but may be triggered by something and it takes us right back to that event. You do not have to work through that alone.

I have a foundation of experience providing therapy for clients with a wide variety of mental health needs, and I have spent several years specializing in anxiety, trauma and support for survivors of abuse in their recovery.
Where applicable, I interweave psychotherapy with Expressive Arts Therapy. The name of my practice, The Spotted Hawk Counseling, PLLC, refers to Walt Whitman's poem "Song of Myself" in which he related to the "untranslatable" in a hawk's cry. Creative self-expression can give rise to insight and provide a path to healing and greater self-acceptance.

Feelings of disappointment, distress, hurt, anxiety, and depression are part of our life experience- but we don’t have to stay there.
I connect with those in front of me to bring to surface the inner strengths and capacities that are personal tools for healing and growth. My genuine desire to help strengthen individuals and their family relationships is my base. Therapy is transformative when an alliance is built that helps individuals and couples to access strength and secure connections.

Recovery from childhood trauma and the symptoms that go along with it (depression, anxiety, chronic tension, etc.) takes time.
Maybe you have a box in your head that's labeled "Past Stuff." You put in all the things you don't like thinking about: hurts from your childhood, the memories of things you did that play on a loop in your head if you're not careful. Lately, things have been leaking out. You feel less in control of your life, and the memories that used to stay in the box are escaping. Or maybe you know the box is there and have a sense that you should sort through it, but you're not sure about doing it alone.

Experiencing trauma, stress, anxiety, life transitions, or depression can feel overwhelming and isolating.
I know what it feels like to balance cultural expectations, process generational trauma, and break cycles while holding gratitude for family sacrifices. These experiences allow me to meet clients with empathy, humility, and curiosity, supporting you as you face identity struggles, life transitions, or the weight of old narratives.

Overwhelmed by anxiety, navigating a difficult life transition, or carrying the weight of past trauma?
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) allows for clients to find the control they are struggling to hold onto. I use CBT because I have seen first hand the empowerment that comes with it. ACT or acceptance and commitment therapy offers similar empowerment with focus on values and emotions as you grow.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
