Needing help with a particular issue or concern is not a sign of weakness. In fact, I believe that reaching out for help is actually a sign of strength! As a Clinical Social Worker for more than 30 years, I would be honored to help you move through whatever it is that is holding you back from learning who your “best self” really is.

These are stressful times for nearly everyone. We need each other more than ever, for company, for comfort, and for compassion about the particular ways life stressors affect our health, happiness, mood, financial security, relationships, substance use, and more.

Navigating life’s difficulties can be challenging, especially when intensified with the impact of traumatic events and broken systems. Considering therapy is courageous. It is my belief that, as the expert of your own story, my hope is for us to work together to create a space where you can cultivate a life that feels authentic to who you are at your core. I operate from an intersectional framework, acknowledging and affirming your story in the context of systems of power. Email is preferred contact method.

My focus is to help people explore their depression, anxiety, or grief -- to help them better connect emotionally to themselves, and to alleviate the resulting distress and personal problems that get in the way of living satisfying, fulfilling lives. I take an affirming stance toward my clients, and strive to create a warm, supportive environment for exploration of the more painful experiences or trauma that may be interfering with relationships, work, and the ability to be truly happy. My approach is holistic, including physical, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects.

When I am introduced to a new client, I want to know why the client has chosen therapy and what needs and goals the client has. Once we discuss this then we will determine the path that we should use to meet those goals. Normally I use Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior therapy or Cognitive Behavior Therapy because I feel that these two types of therapy work well with a variety of issues. I strongly believe in a strength based client focused type of therapy. Everyone has inner strength and I would help you identify those strengths

It is a given that by being human we must deal with challenges in life. How we do that depends on the skills learned and adaptations made during our growing up years. We establish patterns of behavior and thinking that often interfere with our relationships and happiness. My goal in therapy is to help others identify their problem-causing patterns and learn to use effective life-management skills. My specialty is working with the present-day effects of childhood traumatic experiences, with a primary focus on relationship management skills.

It is hard for many of us to reach out to someone for help. It may be embarrassment, or being unsure how therapy would help heal you. Our journey together will be a compassionate, nonjudgemental classroom where you will learn more of your pure self and its ability to heal. It is important that we both see clearly in our work together: "There’s one skill at the center of any healthy family, company, classroom, community, university or nation — the ability to see someone else deeply, to know another person profoundly, to make them feel heard and understood.” David Brooks, New York Times

Accepting new clients. You know your job is taking its toll. Perhaps you wake up dreading another workday. Or you find yourself sad and anxious every Sunday evening. You may no longer find joy or meaning in your work. You may be doing everything you can just to keep up. It may be creeping into your home life, too. You have nothing left at the end of the day for your loved ones, or yourself. You wonder if there is an easier way. You want the fulfillment you experienced at the start of your career. You want enjoyment, rest, and relaxation in your life outside of work. You want to live each day with purpose and peace of mind.

As a therapist, I aim to provide my clients with a safe space to share, connect, and work on treatment goals together. My hope is to create a therapeutic relationship with my clients where they can learn about themselves and how to best cope with life's challenges. I am especially interested in working with adolescents and young adults who have suffered trauma in their life. I believe we all have the strengths within us to persevere even after unique challenges in our lives.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
