Spirituality
is my focus. I support clients on their spiritual exploration and growth. We live in an increasingly complex and stressful world. Many people are suffering under the weight of societal pressures and expectations, which separate us from the heart of what it means to be human living a meaningful and purposeful life. I work with people who struggle to make sense of themselves and their lives. Many have achieved a secure and abundant life, having gained success in careers and fields that provide for their material needs, but their souls are feeling restless and craving real nourishment.

I embrace the theory that people are not defined by their problems, but their problems are external of them. Through this strength-based approach, I believe a person can be empowered to take control of their life. By exploring one's psychology, culture, system, and

My primary goal is helping people find freedom from the burdens and struggles that have been holding them captive and helping to point them toward a healthier, happier life. I strongly believe that counseling should not be an intimidating, unpleasant experience but instead a life-giving, uplifting experience with some laughs along the way. As such, I try to blend humor into the sessions and make the counseling relationship as natural as possible. I specialize with adults and teens, with a primary focus on addiction, depression, anxiety, and spiritual issues.

In a culture infatuated with the idea of growing up, moving forward, and transcending the difficulties of being human, many of us are longing for a return to our deepest and wildest natures. We are longing for that sense of being home in our bodies, in our lives, and on this earth that sustains us. Yet, it can be difficult to find spaces and practices that help us look beyond the overt into what is happening beneath the surface of things— to understand the mythic dimension of our lives through symbols, dreams, stories, body, and imaginal work.

I assist those who have become aware that the story they are currently living is no longer serving them well. Together we will create a therapeutic environment that cultivates this initial awareness. Through the learned application of compassionate boundaries and a mind/body integrative approach, we work to resolve the past dysfunctional or traumatic parts of your story. As we bring balance to our mind/body through awareness, we may align ourselves with our spiritual center to create a new intentional, energetic story that allows healing and the possibility of wellbeing. I further offer nature therapy and grounding/yogic guidance.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
