We all need meaningful relationships with the most important people in our lives and great communication, along with trust, provide the necessary cornerstones of those relationship. Feeling heard and having our views fully validated and supported by each other is also essential to really connecting. Creating a "safe space" to be open and vulnerable with each other. However, connecting with each other on an "emotional level" is the real key to happiness and fulfillment in our relationships and knowing how to do that is the ultimate goal. So why are some people challenged with emotional awareness and connection?

Life is hard, and it helps to speak with someone about what we are dealing with. Societal changes and expectations can cause a lot of stress, anxiety, and worry. Additionally, we can get caught up in situations and make missteps that cause us worry or anxiety. This is true for all people, and men and adolescent boys trying to navigate competing expectations put on us by family, society, and work often find it difficult to talk about their thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental environment. As such, my work focuses on adult and adolescent males. They may be experiencing depression, dealing with a trauma, or anxiety.

At it's core, therapy is a process of healing and change. The decision to address an addiction, change your struggling marriage or address the other issues that hold you back is a difficult, but important step. I work with you to strengthen your relationships, create intimate connections, and sort through the baggage of life. My approach is positive, supportive and challenging when needed. In addition to addiction work, I also do "general practitioner" work like depression, anxiety, couple/marital therapy, and other mental health issues. My office is a safe and affirming space for all gender and sexual orientations.

Now Taking New Individual & Couples Clients. Multicultural, feminist, expat, bilingual, and shaped by diverse experiences, I describe myself as an Asian-American male navigating life between two cultures. I've been an activist, documentary filmmaker, and worked in sales and marketing at an international tech company. Living abroad, I’ve grappled with what it means to be a foreigner and what it means to be marginalized as not Asian enough. These experiences inspired me to become a counselor, driven to help others who feel lost or struggle with their journey, just as I once did.

I earned my MA in Mental Health Counseling from Antioch University Seattle. I believe that having a safe and calm space through which we can explore ourselves and our identity can provide an increased level of understanding as well as new ways through which we can interact with the world around us. At the core of my therapeutic approach is the belief that our thoughts and actions form to meet a need based on the context of our experiences and our body’s responses, and that by understanding the individual and systemic context in which we live we can find new ways of meeting our needs.

For years, I assisted people in dissolving their marriages humanely through mediation. However, I found that too many couples who separate can repair and strengthen their relationships. So, today, I apply my therapeutic skills to support couples in healing their relationships. My primary approach is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. I also work with people who want to work on their intimate relationships as well as those trying to adjust to divorce.

Often change can be out of our control, yet I believe it can still lead to amazing opportunities for growth. I am myself very passionate about working with clients who need support around life changes and work through past trauma. I work with clients of all backgrounds to increase their sense of autonomy over their change whether that’s letting go of an addiction, getting back in the gym, or building better habits. Congratulations on taking the first step and I look forward to starting this journey with you.

Do you desire a more enjoyable, fulfilling life? Do you ever wish you could experience more support and intimacy in your relationships? You may have many things people consider a part of a good life, such as work, family, friends, and various material possessions, and yet you still feel empty and discontented. Furthermore, unwelcomed emotional distress and mood fluctuations may have been bothering you for some time. You have noticed difficulty controlling your worrying thoughts and anxious feelings. Quite often, fatigue and lack of motivation stops you from engaging in activities you used to love. And you wonder what's wrong?

Finding a therapist you feel comfortable with makes the work of therapy easier and more productive. I try to help recognize and name the solutions which thankfully have helped us deal with the troubling events we have made it through. But those solutions- such as avoidance, doing too much for others and too little for ourselves, or over-focusing on work- can become entrenched and now get in the way of feeling at ease or fulfilled. Learning and trying new solutions helps us step away from these patterns. Let's see if we can accomplish something together.

How can we change and grow? SENSING anxiety, stress, fear, and knowing that "something" NEEDS to be addressed and made better is often the start to being more alive. Getting to a higher living and performance level; developing a balancing mindfulness; solving complex problems; working toward life or career transitioning; and working with people who feel "stuck" and are looking for new direction are all parts of my focus as Coach. Comments I’ve received: "You really 'get' me." "I could not have handled this crisis without you." "You challenge me to do better, and hold me accountable." "Thank you for hearing me!" "Fabulous."

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
