I work with individuals and
couples
on healing from depression, anxiety, the escalation of a downward cycle of infidelity, out of control sexual behavior, and substance abuse.
I help individuals struggling with feelings of emptiness and despair to make sense of destructive decisions and to repair broken relationships. Whether we were hurt in our younger years, in our marriage or other relationships, we all experience heartache. At times we may find ourselves stuck, unable to move through or past certain experiences and it is in these phases of life that feelings of emptiness, or the experience of shame, or the quiet desperation to feel alive again, consume us. When these experiences are not understood and cared for, they often lead to poor decisions and ruptured relationships.

I work with individuals and
couples
/families that are finding that what they are processing in their lives are no longer serving them. Whether it be for recent life transitions, anxiety, PTSD, or depression; whatever path or experiences you have provides the right tools and solutions for what you want to do next in life. Part of my role is to shed light on what is working, what is not working. Together, what you share and express with me is part of identifying what solution(s) may be best for you and how to align those solutions by integrating them into your lifestyle.

I can best describe myself as a Competency-based, Cognitive-Behavioral, Family Systems therapist. Practically speaking, that means I have great respect for the challenges we all face in our lives and consider most so called "problem-behaviors" as logical adaptations to difficult situations that simply have outlived their usefulness. Therapy sessions strive to identify out dated problem solving strategies and replace them with newer more effective solutions. While I utilize a number of treatment techniques, I rely most heavily on Cognitive-Behavioral, Skills Training and Family Systems approaches.

As a trauma therapist specializing in
couples
therapy, betrayal, and sexual intimacy, I can help you heal from the pain of infidelity, emotional disconnection, and lack of intimacy. Betrayal is a devastating experience. It leaves you to question essential beliefs about yourself and your
partner
. You need honesty to make sense of what happened. Ruminating on details, feeling anxious and watchful, difficulty trusting, and feeling alone can take its toll. I help you decide what you need to heal, and support you in advocating for the life you want. I also work with
couples
who long to connect, improve communication, and sexual intimacy.

Because so much of our work will depend on our therapeutic
relationship
, you must get a sense of who I am, and consider whether I am someone with whom you can develop a connection.
The work we do is collaborative; it requires us both to be present and fully committed to your journey. My clients are honest about their strengths, virtues, successes and growth areas; curious about their emotions, triggers, and patterns; and committed to designing their lives in a meaningful way. Depending on their inner resources, needs, and concerns, I utilize a tailored, strengths-based approach to promote useful life goals through insight and action. This can be achieved by integrating a variety of modalities, both evidence and non-evidence based; and drawing from my personal, professional and spiritual background.

Healing, growth, and change. Are you wondering if these common outcomes of therapy are actually possible for you, or if therapy works at all? Maybe you have a different set of questions. Can someone really help me overcome this dark depression or intense anxiety? Am I the only one feeling like this? Can our
relationship
rebound after this betrayal? What's wrong with me/him/her/them/us? Will I ever be free of this addiction? Why can't they just be happy for me? Questions like these are worthy to be asked and take a great deal of courage to seek the answers. You don't have to do this alone.

Couples
Therapy.
You have taken a very positive step by deciding to seek therapy. By entering into this process, you recognize the power you hold in cultivating change, and you have the desire to reach a place of wellness . All the wisdom you need comes from within you; I can merely serve as a guide along your journey to find your wisdom. Often, we are not taught the tools needed to engage effectively with the challenges we are met with in life. You are seeking support to more effectively meet those challenges, so that you can flourish outside of the therapeutic space, both now and in the future.

Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
