Friends and
family
are often preoccupied with their own struggles.
These are challenging times. People are experiencing multiple losses, many of which are not acknowledged. Many are feeling lonely, unproductive, or worried about the future. Relationships are facing new challenges. Our ability to cope with stress and uncertainty, and our sense of emotional well-being are more important than ever. Seeking therapy is a great first step in creating a more meaningful and enjoyable life for yourself, and it can benefit those around you as well.

I am accepting new clients. My clients are children, adults, and families. Children may present with behavior problems that are either internalized or externalized and are brought into therapy by a concerned caregiver. Children may be depressed, withdrawn, angry, defiant, or underachieving. Therapy with children is very different from therapy with adults and requires an approach that is developmentally appropriate. Adult clients are often motivated to enter therapy by intrapersonal or interpersonal issues. I provide a confidential, safe place to explore
family
history, and offer solutions that feel right for you.

I can best describe myself as a Competency-based, Cognitive-Behavioral,
Family
Systems therapist. Practically speaking, that means I have great respect for the challenges we all face in our lives and consider most so called "problem-behaviors" as logical adaptations to difficult situations that simply have outlived their usefulness. Therapy sessions strive to identify out dated problem solving strategies and replace them with newer more effective solutions. While I utilize a number of treatment techniques, I rely most heavily on Cognitive-Behavioral, Skills Training and
Family
Systems approaches.

This time in life is such a challenge! The teen is heading toward the pressures of high school and beyond while the
family
is trying to manage their growing independance.
Some of the emotional dis-regulation we see in adolescence is the teen figuring out how to express themselves, in their own unique way, with their peers, their
family
, and in terms of social justice. Teens want to be understood, to be accepted, however they often do not want to work hard to help you understand them.

Are you looking for a therapist that truly understands the heartache of grief and loss? You don't have to go through these struggles alone.

As a long-time teacher, I love the energy that children and teens bring to their world. When changes in the
family
or challenges in the child or teen's social or academic world arise, difficult emotions and related behaviors can be a problem. No matter what age, children, teens, and even parents are always learning and need support to manage those challenges.

Welcome. I apply my 30 plus years of experience to assist adults, adolescents, couples, and children who are seeking happier, better balanced lives. My approach is accepting, hopeful, creative, and sometimes humorous. I use different techniques according to my client's needs, preferences and age. Therapy always addresses personal growth and success. My general orientation is Adlerian. In addition, sessions may include cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, play, art, role playing, and exploration of existential themes. I use an Adlerian approach to child /
family therapy
. This approach is the basis of the popular "Positive Discipline" series.

The search for a counselor can be an overwhelming process in itself and taking the step schedule that first appointment isn’t easy. I believe that we are made to be in relationship with others and when there are difficulties in those relationships, we suffer. Whether you are struggling with
family
, friends or coworker issues, I’d like to help you and do my best to honor the courage and vulnerability it takes to seek out help.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
