The effects of trauma are forced upon us.
My approach is based on cognitive behavioral therapy and intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy. Through these evidence-based theoretical lenses, I offer you a way to identify how defenses prevent experiencing feeling and bring on symptoms and presenting problems... and then we work to build an internal connection to feeling, creating adaptive action.

I am licensed in mental health counseling (LMHC/ACMHC), nationally as a board-certified art therapist (ATR-BC), and am EMDR trained for trauma treatment.
I work with people who are 30-40s, have been in therapy already, and need different tools to stop feeling trapped. We don't want to be disillusioned, but where do we put all the grief, fear, & rage? I work with those who have been prey to other's cruelty; who wonder if life is always going to be hard. I understand it eats you up at night, you might ruminate, panic & lash out at people you love. I think if you feel lonely, different, desperate, and full of shame that it makes sense. I know you're not the only one who feels like a failure because of it. I teach people how to forgive themself, get free, and move forward.

Therapy is about progress, not perfection. You are the expert on what works for you, even if it doesn’t seem clear right now. Together we can figure out where support could be helpful. It takes practice to learn to be vulnerable and to find the words to describe our inner lives. All emotions have meaning, and together we can figure out what they’re trying to tell you.

I have fifteen years of experience with children and families in educational settings, and extra master-level trainings in: Gender and Sexuality, Embodiment and Somatics, Substance Abuse, Shame, Trauma-informed Narrative.
Many find their way to me during moments when life feels heavy or painfully lonely. They’re carrying losses that don’t always have names, feeling disconnected from others or from themselves, or repeating patterns they can’t seem to shift. Beneath it all is a longing to feel whole and integrated. My clients want clarity and a steadier sense of who they are. They believe life is meant to be lived fully, not merely endured.

Each of us experiences times in our life when pain, stress, confusion, or despair overwhelms and consumes us, or when we find ourselves stuck in patterns that we can’t seem to escape, desiring change but unsure of where to begin. It takes courage to admit our need for help, and even more so, to ask for that help. And yet, this is often where healing begins – when we allow another person to come alongside us, help us to see what we can’t see, and offer a sense of hope when hope is hard to find.

Hello, I’m James, and thank you for being here. Whether you are new to therapy or have been sitting on the therapy chaise lounge for years, welcome! First off, there is no "perfect" way to do therapy and there is no "perfect" way to be a client. Frustrating, I know - let's talk about it! I strive to make my practice safe, comfortable, individualized and resourceful. Another core tenant of my practice that I find equally important: your agency/choice. You are the brain in the body, after all, and I will do my best to collaborate with you for achieving your aims (General response time: 48-72 hrs).

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
