I am interested in the meanings that you make from your life experiences and the influence that these have on your perspectives of yourself, your relationships, and your future. I find that viewing problems as separate from personhood helps to lessen feelings of guilt and shame so that we can work together in a collaborative environment. My training in
family
systems theory informs my view of people in the context of their relationships, environment, and culture. I consider it a privilege to work with people to bring about the changes they desire in their lives and relationships.

My clinical experience includes addressing anxiety, depression, life transitions,
family
-of-origin issues, and eating disorders.
Loving presence is at the heart of my practice. I trust the inner wisdom of each individual and view the therapist-client relationship as a collaboration. We all experience challenging seasons of life. In difficult times, we may realize that our habitual behaviors and patterns of relating to others are out of alignment with our core values. In our work together, I will gently encourage self-inquiry in service of realigning with your wise, authentic self. I believe that the body holds a deep wisdom that each one of us can ultimately learn to trust.

I also offer extensive substance abuse assessments and Guardian ad Litem investigations for
family
law cases.
In 35 years of practice as a substance use disorder counselor I have come to the conclusion that individualized, holistic treatment is as good or better than group treatment in many cases. I try to include a client’s significant others in the treatment process whenever possible because support outside the treatment office is crucial, and educated support is the most beneficial. I really believe in lifelong personal growth and see recovery as a foundation to that, not as an end in itself. Recovery works best when it is a process more of running towards the unfoldment of one's natural strengths than away from "bad" choices.

"The journey we are on takes us in all different directions, testing us at every turn. There is help and hope. I have been honored to hear people's stories at various points of their journey; witnessing, observing, supporting, empathizing, listening and reflecting. Through hearing their stories, I have learned how fragile the human condition is, and at the same time, the empowering strengths and resiliency each one intrinsically has in adapting and surviving the difficulties put before them."

Hello, thank you for visiting this page! I'm Shannon Maricielo, a Licensed Marriage and
Family
Associate (LFMTA) in Washington state. I've been interested in human behavior, relationships, and what causes people to make the choices they do my entire life. Human beings fascinate, inspire, and sometimes disappoint and frighten me. Mostly, I find myself in awe of people's endless complexity, beauty and ability to create and experience deep fulfillment through their most emotionally intimate relationships. Interpersonal relationships are at the heart of every aspect of our lives, offering both deep meaning and incredible challenges.

I also provide couples and
family
counseling, adolescent counseling, and support clients as they heal from chronic and acute trauma.
My passion is helping clients rediscover their true potentials and bring joy back into their lives. I follow a strengths-based model of practice while utilizing a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral techniques. Essentially, I believe in a holistic approach, in that all of our experiences (physical, emotional, spiritual, and social) are integral in our unique compositions. Our early experiences often show up in our current lives, and can manifest themselves in a myriad of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I value the interaction with my clients and believe in empowering clients by direct participation in the therapeutic process.

Thank you for visiting my page. I offer 30 years of experience working with marginalized populations in various capacities. Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
