My approach draws on my background in psychodynamic, family systems, cognitive-behavioral,
mindfulness
and attachment therapies, plus years of experience providing school-based services.
I provide individual and family therapy for children, adolescents and adults. I work to develop a trusting relationship with each individual based on acceptance, understanding and mutual respect. Since I have expertise in a variety of treatment approaches, I can collaborate with each individual or family to provide treatment that aligns with the individual or family goals and needs. The process of healing and growth often involves gaining more understanding of oneself and one's family, learning how to draw on existing strengths and resources, gaining confidence, and/or learning new skills.

Meditation and
mindfulness
practice provide pathways to self-compassion, forgiveness and healing.
My clinical work has consisted of treating a variety of clients with different backgrounds and concerns. I am particularly interested and experienced in treating interpersonal relationship problems, self-esteem concerns, family of origin issues, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, codependency and LGBTQ issues. I enjoy facilitating individual and couples therapy with adults. As a compassionate, yet assertive clinician, I work with clients to meet self-identified goals. I view myself more as a guide and mentor than expert. My clients have described me as "down to earth" and "personable."

My primary modalities of practice include
Mindfulness
Practice, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and EMDR - all viewed through a trauma-informed lens and approached in a practical, sensitive, and collaborative manner.
Currently accepting new clients. Life can be complex: relationships, family, school, work. Our lives can be further challenged by the unique aspects of our times. We are under constant bombardment of information, straining our ability to focus and compartmentalize. Factors such as trauma, shame and guilt further complicate things. My approach is to help "break it down and make it simple". This means helping people untangle their thoughts, pressures and feelings, while collaboratively devising plans aimed at learning to manage and alleviate whatever symptoms are causing distress.

My integrated approach is strength-based, trauma-informed, and considers each client’s unique needs using a combination of modalities including
mindfulness
, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).
Life can be tough and difficulties are unavoidable, but counseling can help strengthen your internal resources so you can navigate stressors more effectively. I work with adults to help them manage stress, ease anxiety & depression, and increase self-awareness. My approach is based in empathy & curiosity, and my goal is to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment. At a pace that is comfortable, we’ll work collaboratively to explore and process thoughts & feelings, clarify personal goals, and identify barriers to growth. Together we may explore strengths, practice skills, and identify strategies to facilitate the change you desire.

I am currently maintaining a waitlist. Adolescence and adulthood are challenging; coping with anxiety, depression, and the daily barriers of life can easily complicate things further. Taking the first steps can feel extraordinarily challenging but I will be there to provide support and guidance within your journey. I believe everyone has the capacity to manage life's challenges and I can provide you the skills to do so.

Existential therapy believes that although humans are essentially alone in the world, they long to be connected with themselves and others. I seek to avoid using models that may label people. Truth is discovered subjectively, by each individual. My practice is often, directly aimed at collaboratively making sense of one's experience(s) in order to forge new meanings and develop new identities. From a strengths based perspective, I collaborate with my clients to increase self-awareness and understanding in order to transform fragile or confusing relationships into ones that can be more clear, strong and connected. This includes a specialty in working with couples.

Each person experiences mental distress uniquely. My aim is to partner with my client to ensure their safety in our shared space, create a bond of trust, and then dive into problems and solutions. Whether one experiences identity- or event-based problems and whether those are caused by individual development or social conditions, I strongly believe in the innate ability of trusting partnerships to overcome the troubles in our lives. If I'm not the right therapist for a person, I will work hard to keep them safe until they decide how to move forward.

Change is possible. Sometimes it comes from acceptance strategies and sometimes from change strategies. I utilize many mind-body techniques, including Trauma Releasing Exercises®, Chinese Medicine, EMDR, and Emmett Techniques, to help change happen. Sometimes it takes more than talk. Sometimes the most challenging part is starting.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
