As a seasoned psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience, I work with both individuals and
couples
, and specialize in working with women. I am experienced and comfortable working with a variety of concerns including anxiety,
relationship
difficulties, trauma, stress, depression and life transitions. Grief and losses of all types are special interests. It is certainly not necessary though to have identified a problem, as I also work with people who are feeling stuck or unfulfilled in life to find ways to move forward differently.
Couples
most often contact me to work through
relationship
problems and restore connection.

For the majority of people, counseling gives a sense of relief and hope, in part, by providing a safe and open environment to freely talk with an unbiased and non-judgmental person about what is going on in their relationships and personal lives. I provide help for
couples
who feel as though they don't know what else to do to make things different in their relationships and are experiencing emotional distress due to a variety of reasons from: communication problems, conflict, and distancing, to an overall feeling of disconnect with their partners.

Existential therapy believes that although humans are essentially alone in the world, they long to be connected with themselves and others. I seek to avoid using models that may label people. Truth is discovered subjectively, by each individual. My practice is often, directly aimed at collaboratively making sense of one's experience(s) in order to forge new meanings and develop new identities. From a strengths based perspective, I collaborate with my clients to increase self-awareness and understanding in order to transform fragile or confusing relationships into ones that can be more clear, strong and connected. This includes a specialty in working with
couples
.

I am a psychotherapist and bodyworker in private practice for over28 years. I bring curiosity, compassion, and respect to my work with young adults and adults. I see our work as a dance between an interactive exchange and thoughtful reflection. Calling on the wisdom of many approaches, including Somatic Experiencing [Body- Based], Psychodrama, the work of Murray Bowen [Family Systems], and mindfulness practices, I work with individuals addressing a wide range of issues. Much of my work is focused on
relationship
and attachment. I especially work with individuals who have had challenging or traumatic relational histories.

Each person experiences mental distress uniquely. My aim is to
partner
with my client to ensure their safety in our shared space, create a bond of trust, and then dive into problems and solutions. Whether one experiences identity- or event-based problems and whether those are caused by individual development or social conditions, I strongly believe in the innate ability of trusting partnerships to overcome the troubles in our lives. If I'm not the right therapist for a person, I will work hard to keep them safe until they decide how to move forward.

I look to build mutuality within the therapeutic
relationship
.
I have a focus on providing collaborative support within a framework of social justice and a strong belief that each person has everything they need within them and sometimes we all lose touch with these things and could use some outside support to discover our answers. I view my role as a therapist as the bridge to the answers within that may be difficult to see. I believe that the context of our lives is important to understanding our experiences.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
