Dr. Gregory Wilson offers affordable counseling for individuals, families, couples, and children. He has thirty years' experience, including working with codependency, anxiety and depression, and intimacy and communication issues. Dr. Wilson recently completed a 2-year grant project helping families and others in relationship with persons affected by addiction. Counseling can help you answer the question “What needs to change for you to live the life you want?” The more the drive toward life is thwarted, the stronger is the drive toward destruction. Destructiveness is the outcome of an unlived life.

VT MEDICAID ACCEPTED. NEW CLIENTS WELCOME! Do you react intensely to others' behavior? Do people say you are oversensitive? Do you sometimes need to withdraw from people to feel safe? A history of emotional wounding could be playing a big part in your distress. But it is often difficult to make the connection. Emotional mistreatment is not like physical or overt sexual abuse, which are episodic and which often leave specific memories. It is more of a pattern of behavior directed towards you that leaves you feeling hurt, alone and uncertain of your place in the world.

Using evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I specialize in helping people with anxiety and related problems, including depression, stress, trauma, cancer survivorship, adult ADHD, chronic pain, insomnia, and behavioral medicine. If any of these are interfering with your efforts to achieve healthy goals, maximize your growth potential, and lead a happy, productive life, we could work together to help you identify the psychological and situational factors that are blocking you and teach you the necessary skills to more effectively manage or eliminate those factors. CBT is a very effective way to help you do this.

Therapy is about healing. It's about bringing careful attention to emotional wounds (both old and new) and working with the difficult mental/emotional patterns that interfere with our ability to be healthy and happy. In my practice, I create a client-centered, safe, and confidential environment that makes this work both possible and rewarding. I participate fully in the client's process, holding the space that can allow healing to occur. Most would describe my style as interactive and relational. Depending on the client and presenting need, my treatment modality ranges between Cognitive-Behavioral, mindfulness-based, and psychodynamic.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
