I see that everyone is innately whole. Yet, we are born into a dysfunctional culture that conditions us to suffer individually and collectively. This imprisons our minds into a certain way of thinking. As we see in our society, this thinking creates conflict and division within ourselves and others. Do you want to wake up and break free of the conditions of the mind? Are you willing to question and dig underneath to discover the quiet essence that is you? No matter your age, I would love to guide you on your journey of letting go, waking up, and living in joy, not sorrow.

A mentor of mine said, "Most human suffering stems from grief and shame”. The human experience can feel quite overwhelming and processing our experiences is fundamental to becoming the person you plan to be. Let's give ourselves grace and goals. Let's stop repeating the same habits of behavior and start prioritizing our well being.

For over 25 years, I've worked with a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, and grief. I listen carefully and work to help my clients understand their patterns, such as repeatedly thinking, feeling or doing what they often would rather not. Respecting the need for confidentiality, empathy, honesty and humor, I encourage the exploration of conscious and unconscious thoughts/feelings and help to identify how significant past experiences have influenced the present. Working through issues, using insight and the therapeutic connection, strengthens self acceptance, fulfillment, and success in relationships, school and work.

I believe that the therapeutic relationship itself is the greatest agent of change in therapy. Through cultivated trust, I support clients to explore darkness in order to find what brings them light and joy. I offer an approach focused on the needs, wants, and hopes of the person or couple in the room, which means that my approach varies on a client by client basis.

Is there something you want to change, or accept more fully in your life? While we can become stuck in the past, or worried about the future, it is possible to cultivate greater ease, self compassion and presence. As human beings we are connected in that each of us experiences pain and suffering, yet we are also capable of great joy, growth and resiliency. While often it is our tendency to avoid or push away that which causes us distress, it is in bringing it forward and truly acknowledging what is, that eventually leads to greater freedom.

I operate under the belief that mental health and wellness exists at the junction of the biological, social and psychological facets of an individual, and that a balance is needed to address the human condition. With this in mind even the most difficult of concerns to address can be a profound force for positive change in someone's life.

As a young girl is Pittsburgh, I saw people around me being unhappy, confused, not knowing what to do. I wanted to understand why they got themselves in trouble, and why they were troubled. I was curious, and sad.
Over the years I learned what those unhappy people could have done. My education began as a teacher of young children. Then I became a caseworker helping people with parenting, adoptions, and the miseries of poverty. Finally, I trained to be a therapist, and treated troubled teenagers, adults with illness, and the old and dying.

My work focuses on trauma and early wounds, starting with how those experiences affect you today. Using somatic and mindfulness tools, I will work with you to build awareness of how your body responds in the present moment to memories and stressors, either recent or in the past. Over time, we will build on that awareness so that you begin to have more choices and exercise more agency in moments when you have uncomfortable or difficult internal experiences. At the same time, it is critical to the work that we understand how larger social and political forces impact you - as trauma and as they have shaped you more broadly.

All people have a drive to learn about themselves, and when ill, to understand the personal meanings of their illness. I believe that all people, when given support, help, and knowledge of the mind, can heal. And I believe that most people can understand, with help, how unconscious conflicts cause illness, and that this understanding, and only this understanding, can sustain well-being.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
