Choosing a therapist for yourself or loved one can be a difficult task. A true "Master" of the healing arts is one who has spent years learning, practicing, and refining their skills as a healer. Individuals, couples and families first entering into the therapeutic relationship often feel overwhelmed, confused, anxious and vulnerable. They need to feel safe by knowing that they are truly being heard and respected. They also need to trust that their therapist has sufficient experience to patiently guide them thru the process of self discovery on their path to wellness and feeling whole, perhaps for the first time in their life.

While OCD/anxiety is my primary specialty, it often occurs with other issues such as depression, life changes/transitions, like divorce, pregnancy, work or school, all of which can be difficult to face without help. Accepting new clients! Over the past 20+ years I have accumulated a very unique and in-depth knowledge and experience into what it takes to create positive change in our lives. There is no set way that works for everyone, and improvement is more likely when there is a willingness to engage in a process, to consider other perspectives alongside of our own, and to courageously seek assistance, all cornerstones to positive change. Ultimately, what we think can help lead us to what we become. For more specific detail please visit my website at www.dpetrocelli.org to learn more about my experience and the services I provide.

We all have our own life story. We all go through events in our lives that make holes in our hearts. Sometimes those holes heal over time, and sometimes those holes needs some extra time and attention in order to mend. I believe YOU are the experts of your own life; therefore my goal in therapy is to build a supportive relationship with you based on care, trust, empathy and genuineness when you are sharing about these sensitive struggles.

It is essentially human to seek physical safety, to belong to and be understood by others of our kind, and to know that we can control our lives and make a difference in our world. Life presents challenges sometimes. Learning how to access our resiliency, explore negative thought patterns, and strengthen new positive beliefs assists us in creating and maintaining a thriving daily life. I recognize that each person is diverse, having a unique family, social, and cultural history, and that healing and growth can be dependent on numerous factors. I use therapy methods that help bridge communication with children, youth and adults. I hold also hold BA in studio art that contributes to the creativity element of my work with individuals.

Intervention Therapists

How does an intervention work?

An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behavior and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behavior has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?

There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?

While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?

Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
