Adoptees are often a silent population due to challenges surrounding the issue of trust. Needs for this population may include difficulties connecting with others, difficulty with self esteem & making decisions to appease others rather than for themselves. Goals are often directly linked to these issues. How do I know? I have both lived experiences as a former foster child & adoptee who then used those experiences to launch me into the field of psychotherapy where I accrued over 20 years of experience. Learning to trust & knowing who we are as adoptees is an important part of the healing work we will do together.

Quirky, queer, sensitive, creative and neurodivergent people often wonder why daily living and achieving “success” appears so much easier for others. You may struggle with; focus and organization, intense emotions, burnout, developing rewarding relationships, meeting goals, or a demoralized self-image You are not alone my friend! In fact 1 in 6 people are neurodivergent and we really do learn and think differently and need a different approach to therapy. Clients come to me when they are interested in working with their brains and not against them. My approach is playful, pragmatic and immediately helpful.

Helping couples reconnect and reduce conflict that creates distance in their relationship with the most effective marriage counseling approach...Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). While using EFT as my treatment approach I have successfully guided couples to regain trust, communication, and the love they thought they had lost in their relationship. I am a psychoanalytically trained psychotherapist whose primary focus is on developing a relationship of trust between therapist and client that is essential to the healing process. I put a strong emphasis on the importance of the client's comfort in the room both physically and emotionally. Although I encourage my clients to say everything, I also think their instincts regarding when and how much they want to share should be respected. Respecting the boundaries and privacy of my clients is something I regard as the foundation of a good therapeutic relationship.

I offer both traditional psychotherapy and EMDR to adults. We all know life can be challenging. Depression, anxiety, chronic pain and negative past experiences can all get in the way of being the person you want to be and having the relationships you want and deserve. For over 20 years I have enjoyed helping people attain their goals in therapy and enjoy more satisfying lives.

Hi! I'm Barbara. I have nearly 20 years of experience working with adults who experience anxiety, depression, codependence, personality issues, communication difficulties, and substance use. These issues keep us from living and experiencing our lives and make our worlds smaller. We often need to process our experiences with another individual and help us make sense of our experiences and to gain a different outlook on them.

In my practice I see people dealing with a wide variety of challenges. I have a practice of general psychotherapy with a focus on trauma. I have been certified in EMDR therapy and have additional training and experience in adapting EMDR therapy for the treatment of a wide range of issues including: first responders, anxiety, dissociative disorders, and complex post-traumatic stress. My basic understanding is that people have an innate capacity to grow and heal. As a therapist I see my job as helping to create a safe space in which a person can explore their challenge & choose the interventions that help them achieve their goals.

I believe strongly in the power of self-care, self-compassion, and setting boundaries, and that these are often missing elements when one is struggling. I have experience and enjoy working with people with physical disabilities. The first part of my career was as a hospice social worker for 9 years, supporting many individuals and families throughout their experiences with death, dying, and grieving. This has included individuals with terminal illnesses, as well as loved ones struggling with death and loss, and caregivers. I love working with new human services professionals as well.

I specialize in a type of mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT, pronounced like the word "act"). ACT techniques were created to help clients develop more flexibility in how they respond to everyday challenges, so that they can pivot towards behavior that makes their lives work more of the time.

VT MEDICAID ACCEPTED. NEW CLIENTS WELCOME! Do you react intensely to others' behavior? Do people say you are oversensitive? Do you sometimes need to withdraw from people to feel safe? A history of emotional wounding could be playing a big part in your distress. But it is often difficult to make the connection. Emotional mistreatment is not like physical or overt sexual abuse, which are episodic and which often leave specific memories. It is more of a pattern of behavior directed towards you that leaves you feeling hurt, alone and uncertain of your place in the world.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
