I offer both group and individual therapy for people on a fertility journey, including experiencing infertility, undergoing IUI/IVF, as well as experiencing intended parenthood, pregnancy, the "fourth trimester,” and parenting after infertility.
For over 35 years, as both a fertility psychologist and OB/GYN with a strong interest in infertility, I have loved helping people on their fertility journey. Are you on a fertility journey? Have you experienced obstacles along the way? Perhaps nothing is as disempowering as struggling with fertility. For many of us, issues with fertility mark the first time that we've wanted our bodies to do something that they seem not capable of doing. Challenges with fertility are traumatic experiences. Is it any wonder why we may be struggling?

I help individuals and families adapt to major life-altering events related to loss, separation, adoption, pregnancy, and relationship conflict.
I strive to have clients feel safe and accepted while exploring the difficult issues that bring them to my office. I help some people pursue a deeper understanding of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that interfere with their living a full and vibrant life. With others we develop strategies designed to address particular issues or change specific challenging behaviors. Much of my work explores connections between early life experiences and current functioning. Specific issues such as anxiety, trauma, or loss have unique strategies that are effective and they are introduced as needed.

For over a decade, I’ve worked with individuals in some form of transition or major life change, often with trauma histories not too far below the surface. In each situation, I’ve found the most transformational interactions to be those rooted in both insight and somatic practices so it is a gift to craft a professional life at that precise intersection. Guided by genuine care and warmth, I support clients in gently attuning to the “data” stored in their body as a springboard to better understand, and compassionately respond to, core needs of safety, ease, worth, and authentic connection (with both self and others).

Whether I am with a teen, adult, couple or family, I strive to earn my clients' trust with honesty, warmth and humor; a secure and close therapeutic relationship allows for the most healing and progress. A lot of psychological distress occurs when people feel cut off from or ashamed of some of their feelings. I help clients access and feel compassion about previously disavowed feelings and parts of themselves, allowing for better self-care and self-regulation, and greater closeness with loved ones.

It happens so easily for others, yet month after month the pregnancy test continues coming back negative.
And how about the early stages of motherhood? It certainly feels different from what we see on IG/Tik Tok. The reality is far from those pics on social media. Despite our best efforts, we may feel misunderstood, even by those closest to us. With sleep deprivation setting in and a flood of advice on how to parent the "right" way, we're left feeling all alone.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my profile! I believe therapy is a deeply powerful tool that allows us to recognize and change ineffective patterns in our lives to become more connected, fulfilled versions of ourselves. Just as I expect my clients to take the risk of bringing their authentic selves into the room, I bring myself to our sessions too--in the form of humor, candor, and empathy. I see all kinds of people, but I especially enjoy working with moms of young kids, teens and adults struggling with disordered eating and body image, and NICU moms.

Racing mind? Difficulty sleeping? Worried that things will never get better? I'd love to talk. I provide therapy for people experiencing insomnia and sleep anxiety. I believe that most therapy happens outside of the office, where you practice the skills we cover in each session and track the results. Our time together can then be spent reflecting on what worked, what felt hard, and how we can continue to move toward reaching your goals.

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
