I have been in private practice for eleven years and work with adults of all ages (18-100+). I approach therapy from a psychodynamic/psychoanalytic perspective and an IFS (Internal Family Systems/"parts" based) informed lens. I also integrate mindfulness based approaches. Therapy involves working in a safe environment to develop greater self awareness and insight into one's relationships with oneself and others, one's identity, and one's purpose in life. Through an understanding of one's internal conflicts and relationship with their "parts", one can approach life from a place of more self leadership and self compassion.

I strive to have clients feel safe and accepted while exploring the difficult issues that bring them to my office. I help some people pursue a deeper understanding of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that interfere with their living a full and vibrant life. With others we develop strategies designed to address particular issues or change specific challenging behaviors. Much of my work explores connections between early life experiences and current functioning. Specific issues such as anxiety, trauma, or loss have unique strategies that are effective and they are introduced as needed.

My clients are intelligent, creative, loving, and curious. Together, we identify short- and long-term goals on which to collaborate. Clients often initially reach out because they feel anxious, lost, confused, stuck, dissatisfied, unmotivated or disappointed. Together we use proven strategies and a strengths-based compassionate approach to develop more authentic relationships, clearer communication, generous and protective boundaries, and genuine purpose. We explore what is working well for you, and we limit thoughts and habits that no longer support you. Your goals determine how long we work together.

Dr. Gregory Wilson offers affordable counseling for individuals, families, couples, and children. He has thirty years' experience, including working with codependency, anxiety and depression, and intimacy and communication issues. The focus is based on this question,” What needs to change to get you going where you want to go?, and what is gong on that the change has yet to happen? “The more the drive toward life is thwarted, the stronger is the drive toward destruction; the more life is realized, the less is the strength of destructiveness. Destructiveness is the outcome of unlived life.”

My experience is in treating depressive and anxiety disorders including generalized anxiety, social anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. I also particularly enjoy working with young adults and adults experiencing more complex and severe forms of mental illness (including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other forms of psychosis ). Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a collaborative process in which we’ll work together to identify what you hope to address and create a strategy to achieve your goals. Often it can be helpful to better understand the complex pattern of interactions between your thoughts, emotions and behaviors.

There are many reasons to come to therapy. I specialize in issues with mood and trauma. Issues with mood can result in feelings of anxiety, depression, low mood or mood swings. There are different ways that this can play out in life. You may be trying to manage deep painful emotions, outbursts of anger, feelings of emptiness, low motivation, lethargy or restless energy. Mood issues may result in difficulty making decisions, issues relating to others, feeling dependent on others, having difficulty saying no or asking for help, perfectionism, rigidity or black and white thinking. I work with issues relating to high intellect as well.

As a cognitive-behavioral psychologist, I help clients understand how thoughts directly impact feelings and behaviors. Clients and I will work together to identify the automatic thoughts that accompany feelings such as anxiety, sadness, frustration, and anger. When we're anxious or upset, our thoughts are often inaccurate and overly negative, both about ourselves and others. When we start listening to our thoughts, we can replace them with more accurate and constructive ones, resulting in more positive feelings and behaviors and improved relationships.

I am accepting new clients. If you're not doing, thinking or feeling your best- than you owe it to yourself to do something about it. A counselor can be useful to you by helping you figure out what you want to do. Whether you want to learn to communicate better, improve your self-esteem, perform better academically, socially, athletically or if you want to free yourself from an addiction or from feelings of anxiety/depression/grief, or if you want to improve your relationships- counseling can be very useful. In terms of style, I'm a "regular, easy going guy" who will listen.

What the actual fuck just happened? Maybe that thought’s crossed your mind a few (dozen) times this week. Your mind & body are stuck in survival mode, replaying old pain or bracing for the next disaster. You’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, tried “self-care”—& still feel like you're drowning. Maybe you’re constantly anxious, snapping at the people you love, or so exhausted that even simple tasks feel impossible. And now, you’re trying to parent differently, love differently, live differently - exist differently. You just want to feel safe, normal, & in control, but nothing seems to stick.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
