I focus on relationships, including the formative ones from childhood, current relationship dilemmas, and one's relationship to him/herself. I help clients identify their patterns which contribute to chronic and current life issues, including anxiety, depression and "stuckness", and to imagine new and more creative approaches to these problems. I emphasize the importance of emotional awareness to the goal of therapeutic change. With couples and families, I emphasize styles of communication and the cultivation of non-reactive listening.

We want to feel safe, secure and connected to ourselves, our families/friends and our communities. Obstacles to doing so can include circumstances outside of our control and also the results of our own learned patterns and behaviors. Therapy is an integral part of healing past trauma, validating one's thoughts/feelings/emotions, identifying dysfunctional patterns of engagement and learning new skills to cope. Through work with a therapist, it is possible to shape a life and relationships that include confidence, calm and presence that is so often missed in the busyness of society today.

I believe therapy is about collaboration, working together to discover and explore your strengths and find your unique story. I offer a caring and non-judgmental space where you’ll feel heard as you move toward achieving your personal goals. I’ve been working as a school counselor in Vermont with families in crisis and these past few years have been especially tough due to the pandemic, impacting our youth profoundly. Having witnessed this firsthand within the school system, I was inspired to start my own practice.

For over 20 years I have been fortunate to counsel individuals, couples and families as they strive to improve the quality of their lives. Clients and colleagues describe my style as caring, insightful, humorous, open and direct. The people I help often come to counseling feeling "stuck," weighed down by heavy moods or anxiety, and isolated. They yearn to experience greater joy and ease in their daily life, to recover from past hurts, to feel a deeper sense of meaning in their lives, and to have less conflict with loved ones. Some are looking to be free of addictive behaviors.

My practice is based on the premise that the relationship is key to emotional wellbeing. Life experiences and especially trauma can lead us to distort our interpretations of both our internal and external worlds. My counseling experience began in 2007 working with young people with extensive social, emotional, and behavioral needs. This inevitably raised my awareness of the importance of the family and related support systems. I spent much of my life as a professional musician and have been able to use music in my therapeutic work, supporting the development and maintenance of sharing, self-regulation, and effective communication.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
