Therapy can be as much about finding more ease and joy in one's life as it is about reducing symptoms and suffering. Self-limiting cognitive, behavioral, emotional and sensorimotor (gestures/postures) tendencies often stand in the way of fully engaging in relationships (with self/others) and in the present moment. Bringing non-judgmental attention and awareness to these patterns allows us the freedom to replace re-activity with mindful responding. I work with adults seeking assistance with issues of anxiety, depression , stress management, trauma grief/loss and interpersonal/relational challenges.

I take pride in my practice providing culturally competent and affirming care to everyone, with particular emphasis on LGBTQ clients, clients who struggle with anxiety and depression , clients who would like to achieve greater intimacy in their relationships, and clients who are themselves health care professionals.
Hello! My name is Andrew (he/him/his) and I feel honored to be a resource for you in your pursuit of greater emotional wellness. We may work well together if you are struggling with feeling "stuck" in some area of your life or if you find that you continue to repeat the same patterns over and over again despite your best efforts to make changes. My approach values the building of awareness of how we are struggling and the origins of these struggles while paying equal attention to the ways we can use our awareness in the present to promote change.

If you're like others I've worked with successfully, then you might be anxious and/or depressed , having difficulty in relationships, maybe you've noticed that something has changed but you can't quite put a finger on it, or you have some idea your concerns might be connected to earlier life. Maybe you've had some physical complaints emerge like gastrointestinal problems, headaches, problems with sexual functioning or chronic back tension. You value therapy and are looking for a clear, direct approach and want a therapist who will jump in with you to understand what's happening, and balance support with healthy challenge for growth.

Perhaps you are experiencing depression , anxiety, or another persistent mental-health issue.
Life’s many challenges can leave us feeling powerless, out of control, and stuck in unhealthy patterns. Our wellbeing is also affected by social and cultural factors beyond our control, such as restrictive gender roles, rigid social norms, and systemic oppression. Therapy can help you gain insight on both the internal patterns and the external pressures affecting your mental health, and it can open you up to different ways of thinking, behaving, and responding to the world.

Often symptoms of unresolved struggles or unmet needs show up in our lives in forms such as anxiety, depression , relationship challenges, substance use, unpleasant bodily sensations, and more. These manifest in our lives and tell a story about what needs attention and to find resolve and healing. I help those seeking to gain clearer insight, to encourage more vital and personally meaningful connections with oneself and others. With curiosity and compassion, we can explore your experiences, thoughts, and emotions, to gain insight and clarity, creating the road map to achieve the goals most aligned with you and your life.

I also treat individuals with depression , generalized anxiety disorder, adjustment disorder, panic disorder, grief/bereavement, PTSD, and chronic pain.
I enjoy helping my clients work through the most difficult of life's challenges. I work with individuals from all walks of life, struggling with a variety of conditions and life situations. I take a collaborative approach to treatment, emphasizing personal control in therapy. My interest in psychotherapy stems from my fascination with language and communication. I have spent years researching language from the perspectives of philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. I find this research informs my style of treatment such that I have an ear that is attuned to the subtleties of communication, which many of my patients find extremely supportive.

I help people learn to manage anxiety, depression , relationship issues, grief, effects of past trauma, and unwelcome disruptions to health, work or family life.
Sometimes life throws us one too many curveballs, and our usual manner of coping just isn’t enough. Counseling can be very helpful at such times, offering a dedicated place to speak aloud about thoughts and struggles, and to be heard and understood without being judged. I work hard to create a therapeutic environment in which people feel safe enough to explore and process their experiences, and supported enough to try new ways of thinking and being in their lives. I am a firm believer in every individual's capacity to heal and to grow, and it is an honor and a privilege to be a witness, ally and guide along the way.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
