Asking for help shows courage and opens us up to connection and hope. Looking at what is working in your life, while setting specific goals for what you would like to improve upon are the main areas that I focus on with individuals and families. We all have strengths but sometimes day to day life events, worries and stress bury these personal strengths so deep we struggle to access them. Together, using positive psychology and strength based strategies, we will work to uncover the innate qualities that will move you toward a more hopeful and balanced life.

People seek therapy for a host of reasons, but the goals of counseling tend to be fairly universal: change, growth, acceptance, and understanding. You may be considering therapy because you feel overwhelmed or dissatisfied about some part(s) of your life. It could be that you are navigating a cancer diagnosis, anxiety, grief, or are caretaking for a family member. Life challenges, including parenting, career, and/or interpersonal relationships may be impinging on your happiness and well-being. If you are seeking a place to talk about your experiences, you've taken the first step in the process of change: acknowledging an issue.

I embrace a very holistic approach to working with people, which encompasses exploring all aspects of our selves. Emotional, behavioral, biological/physical/medical, social, and spiritual factors all shape our experiences, and each provide opportunities and avenues for change when we desire that to happen.

In spite of the myriad of mental health diagnoses used today, the core underlying issues that people struggle with are often more alike than not. They simply manifest in different ways for different people. As a general practitioner for over 25 years, I draw upon information from many areas of psychology, as well as allied spiritual and physical fields, to broaden my understanding of the problems being presented. I feel privileged to work as a therapist, and believe compassion, respect, flexible thinking, and a comprehensive knowledge base, are the keys to any good therapy.

You want to appear like you have it all together, effortlessly, yet you feel like you’re running as fast as you can just to keep one step ahead of failure. You’re constantly trying to prove your worth, fake it til you make it, and at all costs avoid letting anyone down. You may not even remember a time when things didn’t feel this way. But you can’t keep living like this: you’re ready for some relief. You’re desperate to turn down the volume on that inner critic, let go of overthinking, and finally enjoy what you’ve worked so hard to create. You’re ready to stop worrying so much and learn to trust yourself again.

I work with couples, families, and individuals looking to strengthen feelings of connection as they navigate relational challenges, transitions, and changes. I have witnessed the powerful healing that can occur when people, like you, allow themselves to be vulnerable and courageous in seeking support. I work to create an environment where people can feel safe to share their stories and open up about their challenges, strengths, values, perspectives, and hopes for the future. I believe in the importance of understanding problems through a systemic lens and supporting people in creating meaningful and lasting changes in their lives.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
