I trust in your ability to heal yourself - Peter Levine:
Trauma is pervasive and misunderstood in our fast paced world and many of us do not understand how our nervous system, brain, and soul are impacted by day to day stressful events. At the Rockbridge Wellness Group we focus on the use of somatic techniques to heal single source, complex, and developmental trauma. Therapy centers on identifying the maladaptive patterns that were established during stressful childhood experiences and moving the nervous system through a series of step to purge, heal, and establish new ways of living.

By talking together in ways which nurture curiosity, compassion and insight we will look at what troubles you, what brings you hope, and which patterns of thinking/feeling/being you are engaging in that are not serving you well now.

Feeling stuck? Struggling to set a boundary? Goals, successes, and happiness are often guided and, occasionally hindered, by the situations we find ourselves in. Traumatic events, interpersonal struggles, and difficult environments can make it challenging to walk our own path and to reach our potential. In these times of hardship it is important to find direction and to develop safety and a strong sense of self. It is with this strength we can make plans for positive changes in the future.

There are many reasons why someone might want to seek out counseling; maybe it's the desire to feel less depressed or anxious, to be more connected or understood, or to learn better communication skills in relationship to others. More often than not, the reason a person reaches out to a therapist is because something is out of balance or 'off'. I believe that people have an inherent desire to feel good and that we do the best we can until we learn better ways.

Consider we create belief systems around experience... past, present or future. At best, beliefs are flexible, forgiving, and optimistic, and we feel mostly in sync with humanity. Sometimes, perhaps due to old patterns of functional behavior, traumatic memories/events, or just familiarity, beliefs and attachments may interfere with growth and healing, and become the root of suffering. If this is true for you, together we'll uncover paths to more adaptive, compassionate self-narratives, while learning sustainable ways to hold experience to increase your life's meaning.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
