Today's crazy pace of life as well as the stresses of family, money, school, employment, not to mention COVID-19 and politics, it is no wonder more and more people are looking for therapeutic support to find balance in their lives. I will strive to help you find that balance, working with and building on your strengths, already present within you, but lost in the chaos of present day life in a safe, supportive environment. We will work to build coping skills to deal with every day life, when things get tough. Life is full of ups and downs. You can learn new ways to shift your perception, to build on the strengths and positives.

As adults, we can carry many layers of stress. Stress that can take a toll on our mental and physical wellbeing, creating tension in our personal and professional experiences, and negatively impacting our quality of life. Often, when we are in this place of limited resiliency, we can find that anxiety and/or depression can take advantage and settle in. Or we find that our relationships or parenting can seem more challenging, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or lost. If this is your experience, you're not alone. Together we can move through the stressors, build skills and resiliency; to find a path to peace and hope.

Grief is an emotion often reserved for the passing of someone meaningful to us, but it’s also a normal emotion in life transitions, like job loss, a ruptured relationship, a move, an accident, the death of a pet, illness, trauma or an empty nest. These experiences may leave you grieving the loss of an idea, an expectation of what your life looked like or where it was going. Loss has a way of isolating a person from others. You may feel pressure to be doing better than you are, or to be further along an arbitrary timeline. Well-intentioned comments that don’t meet you where you are can leave you feeling even more alone.

I have spent the past few years specializing in OCD treatment. Although I do still see clients who are referred for Exposure and Response Prevention therapy, I am moving toward working on helping people find happiness and fulfillment in their lives, particularly as we head into more challenging environmental and political times. Because I spent 3 decades living and working overseas, I have come to view this work through a multi-cultural lens and consider the workings of the world to be impactful in all our lives.

Everyone experiences situations in life that are challenging. We often develop ways to manage these situations that are adaptive at first, and can become harmful, in a variety of ways, later on. I believe, and work to help clients acknowledge, that all our behaviors were helpful at one point. By accepting this, we can move towards healthier coping with acceptance and compassion, for ourselves and others.

Everyone needs the safest possible space to explore oneself to grow, to carefully unpack what is at the root of every discomfort in living—worry, fear, regret, anger—new frustrations and old ones. Finding the right words to name our internal conflicts reveals how we attempt to master the past by repeating our patterns in the present. Bringing this struggle into full awareness offers a fresh opportunity to work our issues and outgrown ways of relating toward final resolution. Such reflection and the articulation of inner experience imparts more freedom and equanimity to our choices, and opens us up to feel more passionate and alive.

Your relationship with food and your body has taken over your life, and you’re tired of feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, and alone. You may be fed up with the shame, tired of having no control, or sick of feeling isolated. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to leave the eating disorder behind. You want to feel confident and in control of your emotions. Most of all, you’re ready to reconnect with yourself.

Ever feel like you're constantly juggling everyone else's needs, saying "yes" even when you're exhausted? This relentless "good girl" act leaves you drained and resentful like you're living in someone else's story. On top of that, your mind replays past situations on a loop. You constantly worry: Will I ever feel "good enough?" Why am I so drawn to relationships that leave me drained? How do I clear these blocks holding me back? Past experiences might have made you feel like you had to be perfect or prove yourself worthy of love. This disconnect between the life you've built and the one you crave is a powerful signal.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
