Family Therapy in Fairfield, VT

I am fond of a playful parenting approach that combines a good sense of boundaries and limits and also the ability to enjoy the journey of being human together in a family that in and of itself is an adventure.
My motto is: "Life is an Adventure". I have worked in the Mental Health field across many settings and with all age groups. As the years pass and my experience deepens, I find that my approach is leaning more and more towards Positive Psychology. While I am skilled and knowledgeable about how to help solve problems, work through issues and reduce symptoms, I also feel that it is my job to help people to access the strengths and assets that they already have or can develop to help them towards healing. I am currently certified as an EMDR Practitioner.

When things go wrong we develop “secondary” strategies as humans. We may become hyperactivated, deactivated, or anxious and avoidant. Emotion allows us vital information about how we experience ourselves, our interpersonal relationships, and our world. It also mobilizes us into action in our attachment relationships. These strategies, the wisest responses you had for survival at that time, may not be serving you well now.

Areas of Focus: Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, PTSD, Grief/Loss, PDD, BiPolar Services: Individual Therapy, Couples Therapy, Family Therapy, Clinical Assessments, Consultation, Mediation
I am committed to effect change through the process of psychotherapy using a direct, reality based approach. Although I draw from many different therapeutic methods, my theoretical orientation is consistent with cognitive-behavioral theories. I believe refuting negative and irrational thinking will increase healthy feelings and behaviors that will greatly impact ones overall wellbeing. I believe effective communication is the key to building, maintaining and repairing severed relationships. Life is not meant to be journeyed alone. Obtaining help along the way does not mean you have failed, it just means you're not alone.

Allow me to see and hear you, your child, and family system and to offer just the kind of support you need.
You try (or tried as a child) to make yourself small and stay under the radar to just get by. Home life is/was unpredictable and sometimes volatile. You’ve struggled with anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and hopelessness. You don’t trust easily and are guarded. You may feel the impacts of this as numbness, tension, pain, or a sense of disconnection from your physicality. You may believe you’re all you’ll ever have in this world. You may struggle with your own gender identity or, as a parent/caregiver, need support to show-up for a gender creative, gender expansive, trans, or non-binary child or teen.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
