New clients welcome (07/10/24) - If you are struggling with strong feelings or relationships then you have come to the right place. Difficult experiences can overwhelm us at different stages in our lives which can lead to poor sleep/appetite, difficulties to connect, racing thoughts, and issues with finding ways to avoid these feelings. Maybe you have had some challenging or stressful experiences in the past, or they may be happening right now. If these experiences sound familiar to you, then perhaps you feel stuck in your life and don't smile as often as you would like. This can be difficult to carry alone.

Therapy is a journey of self-exploration and discovery. Finding the parts of oneself to accentuate, embrace, and accept is part of this journey. Often, we focus on the things holding us back, depression, anxiety, worry, feelings of inadequacy or anger, regret and loss. Discovering what's below these symptoms can lead to a peaceful clarity and compassion. Being able to appreciate our experiences, grow from them, and accept their place within us provides a fertile environment from which we can grow.

Hi, my name is Karl Speirs. I am an EMDRIA certified therapist, approved consultant and EMDR trainer. I am licensed in CT and VT. I use a warm and supportive, yet semi-structured and intentional approach for both in-person and telehealth sessions. I do both short-term and more comprehensive therapy. I can work with you to construct a plan to overcome life's challenges and help move you to a more desired future outcome. I use systems theory (how we interact with the world and ourselves) and EMDR therapy (helping brains naturally rewire in a more adaptive way), in combination with various other approaches.

I operate under the belief that mental health and wellness exists at the junction of the biological, social and psychological facets of an individual, and that a balance is needed to address the human condition. With this in mind even the most difficult of concerns to address can be a profound force for positive change in someone's life.

Unresolved experiences or unmet needs can show up in our lives in many ways. From feelings of anxiety, depression, to interpersonal conflict, and even somatic symptoms, leading to imbalance and often incomplete coping that keeps us stuck. These all tell a story about what needs attention, healing, and resolution. With curiosity and compassion, we can explore your experiences, thoughts, emotions, and patterns, to gain insight and clarity, creating a map toward resolution and goals that most align with you.

I'm dedicated to helping individuals discover and enhance their emotional capacities. I hope to raise awareness within the sense of self, leading to stronger interpersonal relationships and a more fulfilling life. Through the therapeutic experience of being understood by another in a safe and genuine relationship, individuals develop an increased kindness for themselves and others, and are able to experience a more authentic view of themself. This self-awareness often leads us to new ways of relating to others, increased awareness and tolerance for difficult emotions, and the transformation of destructive patterns in our lives.

Taking the first steps can feel extraordinarily challenging but I will be there to provide support and guidance within your journey. I work with individuals, couples, and families who are looking for support as they navigate challenges in their lives. I view the issues that prompt people to come to therapy in the context of their relationships with family and significant others and the patterns present in these relationships. I believe that becoming a better observer of how we behave when we are feeling anxious is an important part of the process of making life changes.

I conceptualize therapy as a collaborative process in which therapist and client determine treatment content and goals, working to create an environment of compassion, challenge and insight capable of motivating those disruptive changes which constitute so much of the meaning of therapy. In attempting to individualize treatment, I cultivate an integrative responsiveness utilizing those techniques that seem best able to serve the client's needs and promote therapeutic goals. Often these goals extend beyond symptom relief to include the enhancement of psychological capacities and resources through self exploration and discovery in the context of a safe and authentic therapeutic relationship.

You might be anxious and/or depressed, having difficulty in relationships, maybe you've noticed that something has changed but you can't quite put a finger on it, or you have some idea your concerns might be connected to earlier life. Maybe you've had some physical complaints emerge like gastrointestinal problems, headaches, problems with sexual functioning or chronic back tension. You value therapy and are looking for a clear, direct approach and want a therapist who will jump in with you to understand what's happening, and balance support with healthy challenge for growth.

I am a licensed clinical social worker with nearly two decades of experience with clients of all ages. I specialize in working with anxiety, depression, and managing the stress of everyday life. I also offer an outdoor/adventure based program for teens using hands-on projects as a conduit for building confidence, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness. Unfortunately. this is only available to private-pay clients. I don't deploy a single therapeutic technique. Rather, I blend the best parts of many different approaches. My clients typically find me warm and validating while gently pushing them to grow in the specific areas.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
