In my practice I see people dealing with a wide variety of challenges. I have a practice of general psychotherapy with a focus on trauma. I have been certified in EMDR therapy and have additional training and experience in adapting EMDR therapy for the treatment of a wide range of issues including: first responders, anxiety, dissociative disorders, and complex post-traumatic stress. My basic understanding is that people have an innate capacity to grow and heal. As a therapist I see my job as helping to create a safe space in which a person can explore their challenge & choose the interventions that help them achieve their goals.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, confused, stuck, unsure of what you need? I can help you navigate conflicting feelings, thoughts, and process negative beliefs and experiences which may be holding you back from reaching your true, full potential. I will work to understand all parts of who you are, openly and honestly challenge you, and encourage you to grow. My approach is direct, and transparency is critical in my practice. I will meet you where you are, and walk with you through the "stuff." I take into consideration your environment, social/emotional supports, history, and current coping skills.

One of the greatest truths is that life can be difficult. Once we see this truth, we can transcend it. My counseling approach is centered on you and where you are in the moment. Together we explore you, your life, where you've been, and where you want to go. We'll design a therapeutic approach that is right for you. I have 35 years of experience and have worked with many models of treatment, treating a myriad of symptoms and life situations. I was a crisis clinician for 27 years, so not much intimidates me.

As adults, we can carry many layers of stress. Stress that can take a toll on our mental and physical wellbeing, creating tension in our personal and professional experiences, and negatively impacting our quality of life. Often, when we are in this place of limited resiliency, we can find that anxiety and/or depression can take advantage and settle in. Or we find that our relationships or parenting can seem more challenging, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or lost. If this is your experience, you're not alone. Together we can move through the stressors, build skills and resiliency; to find a path to peace and hope.

We all need security, acceptance, safety and understanding in our close relationships. Developing insight into our patterns, exploring our core values, and defining what we want and need in relationships can be overwhelming, especially when we don't know how to begin this process. I love meeting clients right where they are, and supporting them through the process of rising to life's challenges, defining and achieving their personal goals within the context of their close relationships. I am especially passionate about supporting neurodivergent individuals and families.

Hi! I'm Barbara. I have nearly 20 years of experience working with adults who experience anxiety, depression, codependence, personality issues, communication difficulties, and substance use. These issues keep us from living and experiencing our lives and make our worlds smaller. We often need to process our experiences with another individual and help us make sense of our experiences and to gain a different outlook on them.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
