Secular psychology has many models for helping people live psychologically and socially healthy lives. And while there is value in these approaches, they are at root secular and not founded upon a religious or spiritual understanding of reality. For some people, the spiritual or religious is central to who they are and how they live. These people are not comfortable with the secular notion that one can be fully healthy while ignoring God. As a Christian, who is trained in secular psychology and Christian theology, I offer as an option a Christian counseling approach that attempts to incorporate the best of both worlds.
Our relationship is critical for therapeutic success. To this end, I work to be empathic, respectful, warm, authentic, and relevant. As others have said, we are harmed in relationship and healed in relationship. If we work together well, we can co-create a mutually beneficial experience. When we struggle with each other, this can be a road toward growth.
Please don't hear me say, "I only work with Christians." I fully respect your right to decide your own life direction. If you are indifferent or even hostile to Christianity, I may still be helpful to you. But I do think it is important that you know who I am and where I am coming from. Remember that every therapist has a worldview that influences therapy.
