It may have protected you before, but can begin to weigh you down over time, limit the possibilities you see, and make it difficult to connect with others. You may have been to therapy before but still feel stuck, like something is getting in the way, or struggle with painful memories. Therapies such as EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and ERP (exposure and response prevention) can help people work through difficult memories and change the patterns that keep them feeling stuck.
I integrate several therapy approaches such as CBT, ACT, and insight-oriented/depth therapy. I've also sought out extra training in EMDR, as well as ERP. ERP is widely considered the gold-standard treatment for OCD and helps people gradually face their fears, build tolerance for uncertainty, and reduce the grip of intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors.
Many people with OCD spend years struggling with unwanted thoughts and compulsions, especially if they are primarily mental or not immediately observable.
