Emotional pain has a way of making life feel narrow and less enjoyable. In therapy, I help clients to focus on what gives them joy, excitement, and meaning in life, and to identify valued goals. As clients get closer their goals, unforeseen obstacles can crop up, and these roadblocks may cause stress or hardship. I offer a variety of coping skills to help people overcome such obstacles. One of the reasons I enjoy being a therapist is that there is no such thing as an "ideal" client. People are all unique in their own ways and no two cases are ever the same. I accept the challenges of resistant or unsure clients, in fact it brings me the greatest satisfaction to help someone that doesn't believe that therapy can help them.

I currently hold a Masters in Addiction and Mental Health and a Masters in Clinical Mental Health. I take an integrated approach to counseling but am based in a logotherapeutic and Existential Psychotherapeutic theoretical orientation. I utilize these approaches while incorporating concepts from therapies such as Somatic and Emotion Focused therapy. Additionally, I am currently practicing EMDR. Jessica Connell, LPC, received her M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Grace College in 2020. She has expertise in trauma focused therapy and has completed post graduate work and training in EMDR trauma informed therapy. Jessica has experience working in private practice and in mental health/addiction residential treatment settings. Jessica is a graduate of Grace College with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She has additional specialized training in EMDR therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy.

I primarily approach therapy through the lenses of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Client-Centered Therapy. My approach to healing integrates genuineness, empathy, validation, humor, and unconditional acceptance. I emphasize a collaborative approach to help clients identify their own unique goals and values, personal strengths, and abilities to implement the change they want. I also work with clients to challenge counterproductive behavioral patterns, address negative thoughts, and foster acceptance of unavoidable life factors that contribute to feeling “stuck” and away from the present moment.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Barrington, Illinois, with more than 20 years of experience working with adults of all ages, adolescents and families. Whether discouraged or overwhelmed, therapy can help improve the quality of your life. I work with clients who are struggling with anxiety, obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviors, academic and occupational problems, depression, relationship issues, and the challenges of life transition. With a background in health psychology, I also have expertise in helping clients whose illness or pain interfere with daily living, (e.g., migraine and IBS as well as other chronic illnesses such as cancer, fibromyalgia, diabetes and heart disease.)

I comprehend mental health issues from not only a psychological, but also from a social and neurological perspective. With this being stated I have developed a unique and comprehensive understanding of my clients. I have worked with several challenging clients and pride myself in my ability to modify treatment interventions for each client's unique needs.
