My goal as a therapist is to bear witness to each client’s unique experiences as they see them, help them to better understand their own perceptions, and uncover the inherent strengths of each individual in a warm, supportive environment. I aspire to help each client gain tools that work best for them to navigate the challenges of life and create a safe space for exploration and self-compassion. I work with adolescents and adults experiencing issues including depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, interpersonal conflict, LGBTQ+ issues, family conflict, trauma, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, and life transitions.

Joy Onukogu is a Licensed Professional Counselor whose clinical counseling experience is with mental health disorders, personality disorders, relationship issues, trauma, and grief. Joy’s primary focus is providing therapy to children, pregnant women, moms, and couples. Joy completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Social Work from Southeast Missouri State University and her master’s degree in marriage and family counseling at Webster Univeristy. Joy provides an environment that fosters healing with a person centered approach, openness and creates a safe space.

There is a solution. There is hope. And there is healing. Anxiety, depression, disordered eating, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, disruption in relationships, substance abuse, and on and on. These are curable, changeable, healable issues. When you go straight to the root of the issue, you can bring deep, lasting change. And we now know that the root of every mental health disorder (and many physical diseases as well) is some form of unresolved trauma. Trauma refers to any moment in our lives that we were unsafe in some way. Big or small, single events or years-long patterns-if we aren't able to process it, we store it.

We help families, couples, and individuals who are struggling. We offer them help when they are working through personal struggles, marriage/couple difficulties, family concerns, the difficult teen years, emotional/behavioral issues, or other difficult life circumstances. This process can be scary and I commend you for starting it! We accept Anthem/BCBS, Optima, and Tricare. We are currently open to new clients!

I have worked with clients with anxiety, depression, substance use, personality, mood regulation, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, PTSD, eating disorders, and problems with trauma. I will often use a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Therapy are forms of therapy I usually like to use as well. I believe that being a therapist has allowed me to work and help clients who are feeling depressed and having thoughts of wanting to hurt
