Life's challenges can sometimes force us to shut down in order to keep going. In therapy, we look at your essential patterns of living and relating--main themes which may have begun in childhood or later. We will look at the ways you cope with and protect yourself in difficult circumstances and how effective they are. Research continues to show that the single most important element of successful therapy is the client's relationship to the therapist as a person, and with the methods of therapy. Another crucial element is the strength and courage you bring to the work.

We will work together to set and revise goals. I will guide your focus, provide insights, and help pace the work. I will also provide education about psychological and neurological processes. Exercise, diet, spiritual beliefs, outside reading, meditation, the arts, and medication (when indicated) can also enhance our work together.

I have worked in clinical settings collaborating with physicians to provide therapy. I have worked intensively with survivors of trauma. I am trained in EMDR. I am a writer, and founded Writers In The Schools in 1986. I have an additional master's degree in Creative Writing and Literature.

Victoria Jones's Groups

Mixed-Gender 20 - 40 year-olds

The most amazing aspect of process groups (and there are many) is the opportunity to learn more about intimate interaction as well as social and professional relationships: how you affect others and how others affect you. In group, relational family patterns can play out--both adaptive and dysfunctional--which provide the opportunity to experiment with new ways of being with others and, as important, being with ourselves.

Mixed-Gender 35 - 70 year-olds

The number one benefit of group is learning to constructively deal with negative emotions--a foundational skill to all healthy relationships. There are typically 5 to 8 group members who attend consistently to assure the trust and cohesiveness necessary for deeper group work. Usually a follow-up or addition to individual therapy, group therapy includes important elements which include: confidentiality, healthy boundaries, safety, and learning by observation.

Woman's Group 30 - 70

Group discussions include relationships and intimacy; career decisions; ways we protect ourselves; anxiety; depression; good boundaries; mood stability; dealing with negative (and positive!) emotions; celebrations of steps forward; and support to preclude (as many) steps backward. Group is the antidote to Facebook because we learn that we are not alone in our problems. Good groups help us build confidence, strengthen self-esteem, sort mix-ups, share wisdom, receive help, and learn how to change and adjust our lives for greater pleasure.
