I prefer the term "patient" over client because I believe people want help from distress and pain in therapy. Effective therapy is one where patients are treated with compassion and value in a nurturing relationship that provides them with knowledge and agency and helps them achieve a sense of well being. I also prefer the idea of treating people, not just disorders or illnesses because people are more than just their symptoms. Suffering often causes people to lose sight of other parts of themselves - their gifts, strengths, dreams and values.
My approach is very brain based, contextual and holistic. When people understand why their behavior makes sense in light of neuroscience and context, it normalizes it and gives them hope. Therapy provides a place for them to learn tools to manage the struggles of life more effectively.
