I utilize Client-Centered, Cognitive/Behavioral, EMDR, and Existential theories.
You have the power to tell your story and use your voice. I have a desire to listen and guide you through the story. An integrative, caring approach with an empathetic style is the approach taken with clients. I have experience working with trauma, anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. I guide clients so they may formulate goals that promote positive outcomes. You can make counseling a productive part of your life. The theories I offer become tools to manage stress and improve functioning.

I take a holistic and integrative approach to therapy which involves integrating various elements of different theories and practice. I lean most heavily on approaches focused on how people’s thinking can change feelings and behaviors while also implementing an approach focused on helping clients achieve their highest potential. Instead of energy spent on the past or negative behaviors, I emphasize the goodness in clients and work toward growth and self-actualization. I also use approaches oriented toward problem-solving including Hypnotherapy, NLP Brain Training, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Coaching, and EMDR therapy.

As a clinician, I am an advocate and skilled provider in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
Are you a teenager trying to navigate the overwhelming feelings and thoughts that life brings on? Are you a survivor of sexual assault or domestic violence/ intimate partner abuse? Are there moments when you notice that the traumas from your past are affecting your relationships and everyday livelihood? So often, we ignore our inner hurts and we force ourselves to smile when we want to scream or laugh when we want to cry. Keeping up an act like that can be exhausting, and it can disconnect you from yourself.

We'll consider Mind-Body approaches like EMDR for faster processing, EFT/Tapping for insight and self-acceptance.
What are the top three thoughts that keep you awake at night recently? What is the one that won't go away despite trying so many of the 'better sleep hacks' for some time? Is it time to just address this one and find some answers? When you've set aside the activities of the day and settled your body down for some much needed rest, your unsettled mind now has the chance to get your full attention. It's likely you're doing well in your relationships and at work. But this is inside you, it's personal, and it could help to have a place to open up and find some relief. Even though you feel well enough, you are ready to feel even better.

I always gravitated to jobs that entailed helping people: Teacher; Red Cross; Covenant House. I had also pursued seminary studies and was briefly on track to becoming a clergyman. Entry into grad school to study Counseling seemed the next natural step in my career path. But there was a more profound reason I became a Professional Helper, and that is my own lifelong struggles with anxiety and depression.

I enjoy working with clients where they are and helping them to work through the difficult situations they are experiencing. Each person has their own unique gifts and strengths that they can learn to depend on. The transition through life can be a very difficult time for both the patient and their family. My goals when working with patients are to help them increase their communication, teach them to embrace differences, help them accept themselves and empower them to tell their own story to find out who they want to be. I have worked with a vast variety of patients from residential, acute, crisis, PHP and IOP services.

My practice is dedicated to offering compassion and support for those who struggle with balancing all the roles and relationships that compete for their attention. Clients often ask me: “How can I hold myself together and still be there for my romantic partner, my career, my children, and my extended family? What about making time for fun and having friends?" Another question that comes up in counseling is about wounds from the past that drag a person down, no matter how hard they have tried to move forward and keep a “positive perspective.”

Life can be overwhelming and lead us to want change. Mental health concerns, worries, daily struggles, past experiences- so many things can pile on and reduce our window of tolerance. Often we struggle to find the next steps towards getting things to a more balanced state. In our time together, I will empower you to identify your needs and work towards achieving your goals in a warm and supportive environment. We will work to build openness and communication skills that help strengthen your natural supports. This is a space for you to work towards things being better- whatever better might look like for you.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
